Why Your Brain Links Smells To Memories and How To Release Negative Emotions

Hey friends! Ever wonder why a smell can take you back to a moment in time? Well,  I’m gonna drop some science on you today! My freshman year of college I learned that the limbic system of the brain plays a major role in interpreting and channeling intense experiences, particularly memories of fear or trauma. This is super basic Psych101 stuff.

The amygdala and hippocampus are 2 parts of the limbic system that play a huge role in emotional processing, and they just happen to be situated less than an inch away from the olfactory nerve. This is why the smell of churros can shoot you back to that childhood trip to Disney or a certain cologne reminds you of your crazy ex boyfriend.

Olfaction (smell) is the sense that is physically closest to the limbic system structures of the amygdala (which is involved in experiencing emotion and influencing behaviors and activities) and the hippocampus (which encompasses memory—working and short term.)

The amygdala is a key player in storing and releasing emotional trauma, and aromas can have a profound effect on both. Essential oils in particular can be very powerful tools in releasing emotional trauma you may not even be consciously aware of.

Young Living oils, because they’ve been properly distilled from clean plants—contain biochemicals, like sesquiterpenes, that increase blood oxygen levels in the brain. This oxygenation coupled with the power of aroma stimulates and affects the amygdala in ways that facilitate the release of stored emotional blocks, both in the subconscious mind and in our body systems. Incredible, right?

I have been using Young Living’s “Feelings kit” to aid in my emotional release, among other empowering things like feeding my mind and stepping up my spiritual practice. Release oil has had such an impact on me that I’d say if you can’t spring for the whole Feelings collection right now, at least get Release oil into your tool box. Diffuse it when you sleep, rub it over your liver area, or just breathe it straight from the bottle. Just do it a few times a day consistently and see what happens.

P.S.- If you’re not yet a Young Living member and don’t have a person you know and trust to guide you, feel free to join our tribe of Joyful Oilers. You can use this link to sign up now or visit this page for more information on getting started. Bye for now!

What is Essential Rewards?

So we all know that vegetables are good for us, right? But if we eat one piece of broccoli do we feel better? Does it change our life? Are we healthier? Not really. Natural health is no different, so it’s always a good idea to try it for a few months. (At least!)

Enter, Essential Rewards. Because while you’re upgrading your healthy lifestyle, why not earn free stuff doing it?? 🙌🏻

The first three months you earn 10% back in points (free money to use on products) on the amount of PV you order on ER. If you buy 100 PV of stuff, you get 10 ER points. If you buy 300 PV worth of stuff, you get 30 ER points. Then your ER earning power goes up after the 3rd month:

4-24 months 20%
25+ months 25%

There are SO many benefits to ER:
Reduced shipping
Earn points
Pick your own products
Pick your own ship date
Earn monthly promotions
Cancel anytime (really, no questions asked and no penalty to cancel!)

I’ll even call with you if you ever decide to cancel. I got your back. 😉

***Remember, Essential Rewards isn’t a way to spend more money, it’s a way to replace your toxic chemicals each month with YL products, like the Thieves line!!!***

The average household spends an average of $150 per month on personal care products, and household products (like soap, cleaner, toothpaste, makeup etc.) But where else can you get FREE products and 10-25% money back on the things you’re already buying anyway? The great news is you only need to spend 50 PV a month to keep it active. Easy peasy!

Back when I used to buy my cleaning products, toothpaste etc at Target, I’d walk in for just the one or two things and end up spending hundreds on all the other stuff that caught my eye. Being on ER has saved me lots of money because I make less Target trips now. And my necessities are sent right to my front door. Win win!

If you need help signing up for ER just let me or your enroller know and we’ll walk you through it!  To read a little more about Essential Rewards (ER), visit our ER page.  Thanks for stopping by!

DIY All Natural Lavender Linen Spray Recipe

I love, love, LOVE making my own DIY linen sprays with my essential oils.  I use them to quickly freshen a room, my car, bed linens, towels, you name it.  One of the first DIY essential oil sprays I ever made was a sleepy time spray for my kiddos using lavender essential oil.  Sprays are really easy to make and you can play around with different oils, but for simplicity’s sake here is how you make a basic DIY lavender linen spray.

You will need:

The Process:

  1. Add 8-12 drops of lavender essential oil to a 2 oz glass spray bottle.
  2. Add a good squirt (about 1 tsp or so) of witch hazel to the bottle. (This acts as an emulsifier so that the water and essential oil can mix together.)
  3. Very carefully fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water. I like to use the small water dispenser that came with my Aria diffuser.
  4. Give it a good shake before every use. Spray your pillows, sheets, or room to your heart’s content. Enjoy!

Thanks for reading, friend!  By for now. 🙂

Dragon Time Essential Oil Blend: Before and After

Yup, it’s that good.

Dragon Time essential oil blend is PERFECT for PMS and/or “that time of the month.”  (Or “shark week” as we call it in our house.)  It combines fennel, clary sage, marjoram, lavender, blue yarrow and jasmine essential oils to help ease PMS symptoms and many discomforts of your period including cramps and even irregularity. It also helps balance emotions, alleviate mood swings and ease head tension associated with hormonal imbalance.

Let’s break down the oils that make up Dragon Time essential oil blend, shall we?

Clary sage supports the body’s production of scleral, which is important for balancing your hormones. Clary sage contains a natural form of sclareol, a phytoestrogen that mimics the function of estrogen. It can help with cramps, PMS, circulatory problems and hormone balancing.

Lavender is a natural relaxant which can calm anxious feelings, headaches and other PMS symptoms.

Jasmine can support you when you’re encountering muscle spasms, when you’re feeling blue, when you feel simultaneously nervous and exhausted, and it helps bring out the feminine attributes.

Fennel is cleansing and can also help with spasms/cramps.  It also has estrogen like activity.

Marjoram is calming to the nerves and can also relieve muscle spasms.  It not only helps with painful periods, but it can also help women during menopause.

Yarrow balances the hormones and supports the body’s natural ability to reduce inflammation.

This blend can be used topically (on the skin) or aromatically (such as in a diffuser.) I like to apply it on my lower abdomen with a bit of carrier oil (like coconut or almond oil) to help spread it around.  When cramping is especially intense it is great when combined with a warm compress over the abdomen or lower back.  Many of my friends like to use it on their inner and outer ankles or on the feet.

This is SUCH a great oil for people with uteruses. You can order yours directly from Young Living if you have an account. Wholesale accounts are best because you get them at 24% off the retail price, and you don’t have to order every month or have an autoship if you don’t want to.  (Important: Please do NOT order from a third party such as Ebay or Amazon as they are often times counterfeit oils!) The best way to become a member and get that wholesale price is to grab yourself a Premium Starter Kit, which you can do here: https://www.youngliving.com/vo/#/signup/start?sponsorid=3471989&enrollerid=3471989 To hear more about essential oils and why you’d want a kit, you can listen to an Essential Oils 101 Class on our website here.

Essential Oils to Avoid During Pregnancy

Essential Oils to Avoid During Pregnancy
A lot of my friends are pregnant right now, and I have been getting a ton of questions about which essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy. I have been directing people to the book Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern, an excellent resource for pregnant women and moms of babies, toddlers and children.  And I’ve been sharing samples of one of my favorite baby/kid oils, Young Living’s Gentle Baby blend.  (You can read some of my thoughts on it on this blog entry here.)

Of course, using essential oils or not during pregnancy is a very personal choice, and there really is no definitive list of which ones should absolutely be avoided.  As with anything during pregnancy, take caution, do your research, and if something goes against your gut instinct then just avoid it for now. 🙂  That said, here is a list of what many people, including aromatherapists, herbalists and physicians say should be avoided during pregnancy:

Basil, Birch, Calamus, Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, Hyssop, Idaho Tansy,
Lavandin (a form of lavender, often sold in stores as lavender), Rosemary, Sage, Tarragon and Wintergreen should be avoided during pregnancy.

Additionally, peppermint should not be taken in the 3rd trimester as it may cause baby to flip!
Clary Sage has been known to cause contractions, so do not use that until you are in the early stages of labor and you are indeed full term and under a doula or doctor’s care. This is a favorite oil to gift to expecting mamas at 41 weeks and beyond.

Oils which many mamas choose to avoid using on babies are Eucalyptus, Basil, Juniper, Peppermint, Hyssop and Wintergreen.

Again, *you* are the mom or soon to be mommy, so it is ultimately your choice. Before you embark in your essential oils journey, you may even want to consult your healthcare provider. Another resource which is extremely helpful (for EVERYONE, not just pregnant mamas) is the Essential Oils Desk Reference by Life Science Publishing.  It is my essential oil bible!  I flip through it for everything!  Feel free to ask questions of other “oily” moms!  We are everywhere and growing in numbers! Do your research, read and if you’re so inclined pray for guidance.

Congratulations, mama! I hope you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. If you have any other questions, feel free to connect with any of The Joyful Oilers on Facebook or shoot me an email at crystal@thejoyfuloilers.com.  If YOU are a Joyful Oiler, ask your questions in our secret Facebook group and someone will jump on and answer you.  Thanks for stopping by! Bye for now!

4 days left for FREE 15 ml Frankincense!

Hello, friends! March is already ending in just a few days, which is just CRAZY to me.

I just wanted to pop in and share the March promos with you because you still have a few days to snag some great oils for FREE. In case you’re new around here, Young Living does promos every month where they reward you with FREE oils and products when you spend certain PV (point value) amounts. PV is typically dollar for dollar, so $1=1 PV. It’s a great way to grow your collection without breaking the bank. 🙂

This month, when you hit 300 PV ***in a single order*** you get $184.22 of free product, including a 15 ml bottle of FRANKINCENSE (whaaaat?!), a 15 ml bottle of lavender, a 5 ml of blue cypress, Thieves fruit & veggie spray and (if this is done on an ER order) you also get a 5 ml bottle of lime Vitality. Lime Vitality is exactly the same as lime essential oil. It’s just got a white label on it to let you know you can use it as a dietary supplement.

Here is what you get for free at the different tiers:

100PV on ER retail value $7.57

5mL Lime Vitality (ER Bonus)
This oil is great in water or NingXia Red, and it’s REALLY awesome in guacamole!  It’s also great for skincare and supports the respiratory and immune systems.

190PV retail value $56.59

Thieves Fruit & Veggie Spray
This convenient spray harnesses the power of Thieves and lime essential oils to get your fruits and veggies squeaky clean.

5mL Blue Cypress (ER Bonus)
Blue Cypress is a great woodsy oil that is soothing to the skin. It works on the emotions by restoring balance. It is grounding and helps instill a feeling confidence. It’s also great for respiratory support and is an excellent support to the circulatory system.

250PV retail value $87.51

190PV promos, plus…
15mL Lavender
The swiss army knife of essential oils. My family orders this one every single month, so getting one for free this month is pretty awesome!  We love it for supporting healthy skin and restful sleep. My kids ask for it in their diffusers every night before bed.
300PV retail value $184.22

250PV promos, plus…
15mL Frankincense
The big bottle of Frankincense costs nearly $100 so this is an ah-MAZING deal! If it was good enough for baby Jesus, it’s good enough for us! Did you know that Young Living is the first and ONLY company in the world to obtain permission to export this revered oil to the Western world? There’s no other like it! I use it to smooth out the look of my previously sun-damaged skin and for grounding during meditation.

So there you have it!  March’s promos are pretty amazing.  If you’re new around here and you don’t have your Premium Starter Kit and membership yet, no worries!  You can grab yours now by using this link.  You can totally participate in the March promo by adding another 200 PV (points value, $1=1 PV in most cases) to your shopping cart before you hit “activate and check out.”  Your kit comes with 5 ml bottles of lavender and frankincense (plus 10 other great oils and a diffuser) but you will probably run out of those two staple oils soon and the 15 ml bottles for FREE will totally come in handy!  Questions?  Connect with me personally on Facebook by sending me a friend request, “like” our Joyful Oilers Facebook page to be alerted when new blogs are up or shoot me an email at crystal@thejoyfuloilers.com.  I hope to connect with you soon!  Bye for now!

Spring is in the air! These oils can help you better enjoy your time outdoors!

Aaaah, spring time is upon us at long last!  The birds are singing, the bees are buzzing, the flowers are in full bloom, and there is pollen on the breeze.  Spring is in the air, if you catch my drift.  If you are a person who tends to get itchy and sneezy being outside during the spring season, this essential oil trio is for you.  I never experienced this reaction to the outdoors until after I was pregnant with my daughter, but now I am very much susceptible but I am so glad I was introduced to this dynamic trio.

When you want to stay your happy, breathing easy self no matter what is out there in the air, these three oils can offer you the support you need.  Just add 5 drops of lavender, 4 drops of lemon and 3 drops of peppermint essential oils to your cold water diffuser.  By the way, all three of these oils and a cold water diffuser come in the Premium Starter Kit, so if you haven’t already you can grab yours here by clicking on this link.  Be sure to click “wholesale membership” as it’s the only way to get a kit and 24% off your oils. 🙂

Diffusing this trio is great when you’re at home or at the office, but if you’re on the run, you can take Lavender Vitality, Lemon Vitality and Peppermint Vitality essential oils in an empty veggie capsule topped with avocado oil or an edible carrier oil of your choosing.  (Note: Young Living’s Vitality oils are the only essential oils which have been specifically labeled for ingestion as a dietary supplement and approved by the FDA, so please do NOT try this with other essential oil brands, even those labeled as organic. You can read more about why that is here.) I personally love the convenience of squirting Young Living’s V-6 oil from the pump bottle or filling a glass eye dropper bottle with my favorite local organic avocado oil. Either one will do!  If your reaction to being outdoors is very severe, you can also add Copaiba Vitality to the mix, which by the way is also included in your Premium Starter Kit.

Some people like to apply these oils to the bridge of the nose topically, but I do not recommend doing that as lemon essential oil is photosensitive, meaning it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.  If you want to take these oils on the go but are not comfortable ingesting them, you can pre-mix this trio in one of your mini glass drams (from your Premium Starter Kit) and carry it in your purse. Then when you need support, simply drip a drop of your pre-mixed blend into the palm of your non-dominant hand, rotate your hands together a few times clockwise and then inhale deeply from your hands with a few deep breaths.  You can do this as needed.

I hope you enjoy some time in the sunshine this spring season!  Let me know if you’ve tried this trio and what you think!  It smells wonderfully together, and I think you’ll love it if you haven’t tried it already.  Thanks for reading, friend!  Bye for now…

Free Peace & Calming Essential Oil Blend with Dew Drop Premium Starter Kit through January 31, 2017

Click on this picture to order your Premium Starter Kit with Dewdrop Diffuser now!

At last Saturday’s Young Living Live Your Passion Rally, it was announced that Young Living is generously gifting brand new members a bottle of Peace & Calming when they sign up for a wholesale membership with the Dewdrop Diffuser Premium Starter Kit (pictured above.)  Seasoned oilers are going cuckoo CRAZY for this deal (and wishing we could be brand new members to take advantage of this too) because Peace & Calming is one of the most LOVED and COVETED oils, and it just came back in stock after a whole year of being gone.

Peace & Calming was one of the first Young Living oils I tried that really convinced me to make the Young Living switch.  (That and the Thieves blend, which I know I’ve mentioned before.)  In case you haven’t heard my story, I had been using a popular brand of organic oils from Sprouts, our local health food store.  I had been using them for years and years despite never getting any results from them.  I don’t know why.  Maybe because the USDA organic label gave me the warm fuzzies, or maybe because I thought they might someday start working.  Ha!  But he grocery store lavender essential oil never helped my kids fall asleep, and when I diffused it, it actually bothered the back of my throat—despite having that USDA label.  I found out WHY that was later, but I digress.

A mama friend from my kids’ school invited me over to her house and let me use her Young Living Peace & Calming and lavender essential oils to make a sleepy time roll-on blend for my kiddos.  I was skeptical, since I had zero exciting results with my previous oils.  But I loved the smell and they didn’t bother the back of my throat, so I gave them a whirl.  I was SHOCKED and AMAZED that the sleepy time blend actually worked on my kiddos, who had until that time given me nightly grief at bedtime.  Mamas, I know you know what I’m talking about.  After doing a lot of research and learning about Seed to Seal and Young Living’s beautiful, organic farms, I made the switch to Young Living permanently and I use their oils exclusively.  I finally got my Premium Starter Kit and became a wholesale member of Young Living.

Peace & Calming (which does not come in the kit) quickly became one of my favorite oils, and I listened to my oily friends and bought it every month so I could have it when it inevitably went out of stock.  This oil is so precious that Young Living limits each account to one bottle per month when it is in stock, and even then it disappears quickly.  In fact, you can’t buy it right now! But you can have a bottle of it if you order your Premium Starter Kit with Dew Drop Diffuser between now and January 31, 2017 by 10:59 pm MST OR if you participate in this month’s 300 PV Promotion.

When you grab your Premium Starter Kit with Dewdrop Diffuser, they are giving you a bottle of one of their best loved oils—valued at retail $45.72—for FREE.  That’s amazing.  You’re paying $160 plus tax and shipping but getting around $400 worth of great stuff.

This is why we love Peace & Calming so much:

  • It’s a sweet smelling blend of ylang ylang, orange, tangerine, patchouli and blue tansy essential oils that promotes relaxation and a deep sense of peace and emotional well-being.
  • It helps to dampen tensions and uplifts the spirits.
  • Used on the bottoms of feet or in diffusers, it helps promote a good night’s sleep—even in kids!
  • It helps to calm overactive and difficult-to-manage children. It was a Godsend when my kids were home over winter break and REALLY excited for Santa to come!
  • It helps support those with depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia.

If you’re new around here and you’re not sure what to expect with your Premium Starter Kit, here is a brief overview of what will be delivered to your door (in addition to the free Peace & Calming if you order by January 31, 2017):

Young Living Premium Starter Kit with Dew Drop Diffuser

  • 11 bottles of therapeutic grade essential oils (plus a bonus bottle of Peace & Calming if you order between 1/21/17 and 1/31/17.)
  • 2 packets of NingXia Red juice, a powerful antioxidant supplement drink made from wolfberry (goji) juice, blueberry, pomegranate, apricot, and raspberry juices and infused with lemon and orange essential oils. NingXia Red supports immune function, liver function, eye health and can increase energy!
  • A wholesale membership so you get 24% off everything. No you don’t have to sell anything and no, autoships are not required! These options are available, but not required!
  • 10 glass drams so you can take your oils to go or give samples to your friends.
  • 10 sample sachets, so you can take oils to go or give samples to your friends.
  • An AromaGlide roller fitment, so you can turn one of your oils into a roller bottle.

The current kit oils (in the United States) include:

  • R.C. (respiratory comfort, lots of eucalyptus to open up lungs, coughing, stuffiness etc)
  • Digize (digestive support whether your pooping too much or not enough, kidney support etc)
  • Stress Away (a tropical vacation in a bottle, great for anxious, sad and stressed out people. I use it before I get into my car because driving in Southern California stresses me out.)

So there you have it.  If you have any other questions about the Premium Starter Kit, Peace & Calming, or anything else, please feel free to reach out to me.  You can click the following link to order your kit through me right now: https://www.youngliving.com/vo/#/signup/start?sponsorid=3471989&enrollerid=3471989  Please note that you must choose the wholesale membership option to get a Dew Drop kit and the Peace & Calming oil. The sign up process should just take a few minutes, and yes, they will ask you for your social security number or tax id number; this is because it is law when you have a wholesale account, but they will only use this information if you decide to sell and other people use your number to buy kits through you AND you earn over $600 in a year.  Only about 7 or 8% of us wholesale members do that though, so no pressure! 🙂

Thanks so much for reading.  I hope you take advantage and grab your kit today!  Have a wonderful week! 🙂

One of my favorite essential oils for staying in the present moment

“If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.” -Lao Tzu

One of the intentions I set for myself in 2017 is to be more present. It’s easy to fall into the trap of dwelling on my past failures, and for as long as I can remember, even easier for me to stress over future events that may or may not even happen. My kids have taught me that pure joy and contentment live in the NOW, another reason I’ve made meditation a bigger priority for myself over the last few weeks.

I’ve been using Present Time essential oil blend to help anchor myself in the present moment. It’s a blend of bitter orange, black spruce, ylang ylang and sweet almond oils. The ancient Egyptians used citrus essential oils for stabilizing and strengthening the emotions, promoting peace, confidence and awareness. Ylang ylang increases relaxation, balances male and female energies, and restores confidence and equilibrium. Black Spruce fosters a sense of balance and grounding, and can open up and release emotional blocks. Almond oil adds a rich source of Vitamin E, and according to Ayurveda (an ancient holistic healthcare practice in India) it is considered a nutrient for the brain and nervous system.

I’ve been applying this oil blend topically over my heart to open up that chakra and it has really helped me to stay grounded. Plus it smells amazing. Have you tried this one out? If so, let me know in the comments!

15 ml Joy

15 ml Eucalyptus Globulus

5 ml Basil Vitality (ER exclusive)

5 ml Citrus Fresh Vitality (ER exclusive)

Retail value= $241.44

Let’s go through each oil so you can know why this is such a good deal. I mean, at the 300 PV level you’re getting $241.44 worth of free stuff, and it’s extremely valuable free stuff.

Citrus Fresh Vitality – This is a blend of orange, tangerine, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit and spearmint essential oils. Vitality oils are labeled for use as a dietary supplement and can be used to flavor your water and support various body systems. I like to diffuse it to help stimulate right brain activity and get my creative juices flowing. It is elevating, uplifting, cleansing and detoxifying. You can also use it to help support a healthy weight as grapefruit has been shown to dissolve fat.

Basil Vitality – Basil Vitality is another oil that may be ingested, if desired.  Use it to add flavor to your soups and sauces, or take it in veggie capsules to help ease occasional head pressure.  Use it in your diffuser to help ward off mental fatigue and to help support your respiratory system. Use it topically to soothe insect bites.

Eucalyptus Globulus – This variety of eucalyptus is famous for its ability to support the respiratory system. It’s also soothing to aching muscles, so use it in an epsom salt bath after a good workout. It helps to promote health, well being, purification and supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It also smells awesome; diffuse it in your home to create a spa like atmosphere.

Joy – If you know anything about frequency, Joy is a high vibrational oil and an absolute staple for emotional well being. A beautiful blend of rose, bergamot, mandarin, ylang ylang, lemon, geranium, jasmine, palmarosa, Roman chamomile and rosewood, Joy produces a magnetic energy that brings joy to the heart, mind and soul. I like to wear it on my heart when I’m feeling blue, and I like to gift it to people who are grieving. It has a romantic, floral aroma, perfect for adding to the bath or the diffuser.

Helichrysum – This is a very precious essential oil that can do amazing things. It is wonderful for the bones, joints, bumps, bruises, the nervous system etc. It detoxes, supports a healthy circulatory system, healthy skin and so much more. Google helichrysum and prepare to have your mind blown.

Peace & Calming – Peace & Calming is pretty much summed up by its name. It is wonderful for calming overactive children after a particularly exciting day. It is great for a restful night’s sleep—especially for those of you who aren’t fond of lavender for that purpose. It’s great for calming the nerves and shaking off the blues. A blend of blue tansy, patchouli, tangerine, orange and ylang ylang, this oil helps to dampen tension and uplift spirits. This one is well loved by Young Living enthusiasts and so quantities are limited to one bottle per account per month when it’s available, and it’s usually only around for a month or two out of the year. So if you want this one, you need to get it through this promo while supplies last.

As for the essential rewards exclusives, they are only available when the promos levels are reached on ER orders.  In case you’re not sure what ER is, it is Young Living’s Rewards program where you subscribe to monthly orders and earn points back on the things you buy which you can then use to get free product. If you find yourself ordering $50ish or more every month, then Essential Rewards (ER) is the way to go so you can earn even MORE free stuff and get cheaper shipping. For more about ER, you can click here.

So, are you going to take advantage of January’s incredible promos? I sure am. My advice to you is to act sooner rather than later because I have a feeling that supplies may not last long—especially for that Peace & Calming. It really is a magical, unicorn of an oil!  Well, that about sums that up. Happy New Year everyone!
