Are essential oils safe for kids?

A question I often hear is “are essential oils safe for kids?” The short answer is, yes, but with some added precautions!

Firstly, essential oils are extremely concentrated and not exactly regulated in the way you might assume.

The closest thing we have in the United States is an FDA requirement to have at least 5% essential oil in a bottle to be labeled “pure” or “therapeutic grade.” This is even true of the “USDA organic” ones; just the 5% oil part has to be organic, but the other 95% can be whatever and they don’t have to tell you what it is. 😳

This means: do your research and know your source! Cheap companies use lots of pesticides and chemical laden fillers, and you don’t want high concentrations of those things on your babies! Our fam uses Young Living oils exclusively because of their unique Seed to Seal promise, and because I’ve lived that promise firsthand! .

Secondly, always dilute essential oils when applying to your child’s skin. One drop of Young Living essential oil contains as many as 400 million trillion molecules! A little goes a long way, and children have more sensitive skin than adults do. We like organic coconut 🥥 oil around here.

Avoid applying essential oils to the eyes, inside of the ears or any mucous membranes. (This applies to adults as well!)

Read the usage label on the bottle and be aware of which oils are “hot.” Dilute these extra and apply to the bottoms of the feet where the skin is a bit tougher. (Think Thieves essential oil blend, which contains spicy cinnamon and clove.) Some great carrier oils you can use are V-6 vegetable oil complex from Young Living, organic coconut oil, grapeseed oil, almond oil, jojoba oil etc.

Me mindful of how you store your oils so little hands can’t get into them without supervision, and keep the oils with child resistant tops way out of reach.

Diffusing oils is another great option for the littles. Both of my kiddos have diffusers in their own rooms with their own sleepy time blends. (We got one diffuser in our starter kit and I immediately invested in extras for our other rooms!)

It’s also helpful to have an essential oil reference guide of some sort on hand so you can look up oils as you go, in case you’re ever unsure about one.

And pick up a copy of the book Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern! That is an excellent source for all oily things pregnancy, baby & kid related. 💕

And if you’re REALLY unsure, Young Living has a whole line of pre-diluted oils just for kids called KidScents. We love this line, especially Owie and Tummygize. 😊

If you don’t have Young Living oils already, you can use this link to become a wholesale member right now, or if you feel like you want more info you can check out the kit on our blog and we’ll tell you all about why you need it in your life. 💕 Happy oiling!

What is Essential Rewards?

So we all know that vegetables are good for us, right? But if we eat one piece of broccoli do we feel better? Does it change our life? Are we healthier? Not really. Natural health is no different, so it’s always a good idea to try it for a few months. (At least!)

Enter, Essential Rewards. Because while you’re upgrading your healthy lifestyle, why not earn free stuff doing it?? 🙌🏻

The first three months you earn 10% back in points (free money to use on products) on the amount of PV you order on ER. If you buy 100 PV of stuff, you get 10 ER points. If you buy 300 PV worth of stuff, you get 30 ER points. Then your ER earning power goes up after the 3rd month:

4-24 months 20%
25+ months 25%

There are SO many benefits to ER:
Reduced shipping
Earn points
Pick your own products
Pick your own ship date
Earn monthly promotions
Cancel anytime (really, no questions asked and no penalty to cancel!)

I’ll even call with you if you ever decide to cancel. I got your back. 😉

***Remember, Essential Rewards isn’t a way to spend more money, it’s a way to replace your toxic chemicals each month with YL products, like the Thieves line!!!***

The average household spends an average of $150 per month on personal care products, and household products (like soap, cleaner, toothpaste, makeup etc.) But where else can you get FREE products and 10-25% money back on the things you’re already buying anyway? The great news is you only need to spend 50 PV a month to keep it active. Easy peasy!

Back when I used to buy my cleaning products, toothpaste etc at Target, I’d walk in for just the one or two things and end up spending hundreds on all the other stuff that caught my eye. Being on ER has saved me lots of money because I make less Target trips now. And my necessities are sent right to my front door. Win win!

If you need help signing up for ER just let me or your enroller know and we’ll walk you through it!  To read a little more about Essential Rewards (ER), visit our ER page.  Thanks for stopping by!

Einkorn Flour – Young Living’s Alternative to Modern Wheat Flour

If you’re here, you’re probably aware that Young Living is the world-leader in essential oils, but did you also know that Young Living’s offerings go far beyond essential oils?  Young Living’s farms produce plants which go into a number of wellness supporting products, including non-toxic cleaning products for your household, personal care products (ie: toothpaste, shampoo, face wash, lotions etc), essential oil infused supplements and even food.

Einkorn wheat is one of the many plants grown at Young Living’s farm in Mona, Utah, where you’ll find nearly 1,400 acres of pristine land filled with aromatic herbs and flowers.  Einkorn is known as the oldest variety of wheat, the original “staff-of-life” grain referred to in the Bible, so it has a completely different genetic makeup than modern day wheat.  Einkorn is not hybridized like modern wheat is.  It has only 14 chromosomes (versus modern wheat’s 42) which changes its gluten structure making Einkorn much easier to digest.

Modern wheat has gone beyond just hybridization and is now being contaminated by genetically modified varieties.  Ever wonder why so many people have food allergies and sensitivities these days?  One reason is because modern “food” has become unrecognizable to the human body and is treated as a foreign substance, causing inflammation, resulting in disease.  Coupled with the GMO takeover of the modern food supply in the US, hybridized wheat has wreaked havoc on public health.  It’s no wonder people are sicker than ever.

Recognizing the need for easier-to-digest alternatives to modern wheat flour, D. Gary Young took Einkorn grain, ground it up and brought Einkorn Flour to the table.  You can substitute Einkorn flour for wheat flour in a 1:1 ratio, using it wherever flour is called for.  (Pro tip: Einkorn flour doesn’t absorb as much liquid as the other stuff, so try reducing the liquid in your recipes by about 20%.)

Why use Young Living’s Einkorn flour instead of conventional flour?

  • Einkorn is considered more nutritious than modern wheat, based on the higher level of protein, essential fatty acids, phosphorous, potassium, pyridoxine, and beta-carotene.
  • Einkorn only has 14 chromosomes, so it has a different gluten structure and is easier to digest than modern day wheat.
  • Einkorn is a hulled wheat, whereas modern wheats are not.  The hull can protect the grain from stray chemical contamination and insects.
  • Einkorn offers higher vitamin B6 content, twice the vitamin A, four times more beta-carotene and lutein, and five times more riboflavin.
  • Einkorn is very low in gluten, and the gluten that is there is in a form that is easier to digest.
  • Unlike most wheat flour alternatives which contain weird ingredients like xanthan gum (a thickener derived from GMO corn), the only ingredient in Young Living’s Einkorn Flour is whole grain Einkorn Flour, backed by Young Living’s Seed to Seal practices which exceed organic standards for purity and sustainability.
  • Einkorn wheat is not hybridized.  It is a true, ancient grain.  It is grown just as nature intended in its pure, original form.
  • Young Living’s Einkorn is grown on pristine land without the use of harmful pesticides and Agrichemicals, resulting in a pure, clean product healthy enough for the whole family.

Disclaimer: Given all that, I should mention that Einkorn flour is not gluten free, and whether or not it is suitable for people with Celiac or other gluten-allergies remains to be seen.  There is hope, however, but please proceed with caution.  The gluten in Einkorn has a different genetic structure, so many people who have difficulty digesting the proteins found in most gluten can digest Einkorn with no trouble.  As a person who is not allergic to gluten but is sensitive to its effects (mainly lethargy and bloating) I can say that I have no problems when I use Einkorn flour.  My family has happily made the switch and it has been wonderful for us.  I plan on sharing some of my Einkorn flour recipes as the cooler weather makes its appearance this fall, so stay tuned!

If you’d like to try Einkorn flour for yourself, you can use this link to purchase some.  The wholesale price is for people who have purchased a Premium Starter Kit, so if you’d like more info about that just let me know.  You can scroll down for my contact info.  For those of you already using Einkorn flour, what has been your favorite use so far?  Let me know in the comments!

Young Living Essential Oils Premium Starter Kit – Why should you get one?

The best way to get started with Young Living essential oils is to grab yourself a Premium Starter Kit (PSK.)  This is how all of the Joyful Oilers got started, because it’s by far the best value, saving you over $150 versus buying everything separately at the retail price.  Plus when you buy a PSK you automatically become a wholesale member of Young Living, which simply means you get to enjoy wholesale pricing AND (***if you want to***) you are also eligible to participate in Essential Rewards and earning commissions when you share oils.  These last two are totally optional however, and many Joyful Oilers become wholesale members just to get the discount.  Totally fine!

What comes in the kit?

The kit comes with a diffuser (you choose which one!), 11 of the most popular essential oils, a roller, samples, mini bottles for travel, 2 packets of NingXia Red antioxidant berry juice, awesome literature and more!  (See the pic above!) Plus, when you enroll through a Joyful Oiler, you get access to our FB oil groups and an informative handbook to help you get started! 🎉

These are the oils that come in the current PSK and—in a nutshell—what they can do for YOU.

Thieves – a.k.a. the healthy-keeper.  It helps clean the air, boosts immunity, makes our digestive systems work their best, and it basically smells like Christmas.
Purification – gets rid of bad odors and also cleanses the air. It feels amazing rubbed on the outside of your throat when you need extra support in the Winter. I use it as all natural, non-toxic deodorant and I love it in our laundry!
Copaiba – supports the body’s response to injury/irritation, is a driving oil (enhances other oils!), regulates my natural immune responses, can be soothing, promotes youthful appearance from the inside out. ☺️
Frankincense – Incredible for my skin and immune system, eases occasional and minor tension/anxiety, promotes feelings of calmness and balance, and (super awesome) it was given to baby Jesus as a gift. This is a great one to use during prayer and meditation practices, or for a good night’s rest.
RC – contains 3 different kinds of eucalyptus which have naturally occurring eucalyptol (really good stuff), inspires and uplifts before working out, creates a comforting environment, and is excellent for respiratory support.
DiGize – supports a super healthy digestive system, alleviates nausea and upset/sour stomach, great for occasional irregularity or upset tummies, relief from occasional heartburn
Lemon – naturally highlights hair, all natural de-greaser, maintains energy levels, helps oily skin, calluses, cellulite, detoxing your body, weight loss. The works!
Stress Away – exactly what it says. We roll it onto our wrists and the back of our necks anytime we want it. ☺️ This one makes for one happy mama on busy weekday mornings and in traffic on the crazy, California freeways. And did I mention it smells like key lime pie? Oh yes.
Peppermint – part of the trio that helps me enjoy springtime outdoors, keeps my head happy when it’s under pressure, supports the digestive system, promotes proper nasal and respiratory function, helps curb sugar cravings, and helps me feel more awake and energized! I’m obsessed.
Panaway – so many types of relief. Helps with occasional head discomfort, everyday joint and muscle soreness, and that “time of the month” cramp sucky-ness. A must have for the gym.
Lavender – “the Swiss Army knife of essential oils.” We use it for enjoying the springtime outdoors. It’s also great for relaxation, sleepy cream, a calm environment for kids and grownups, healthy, beautiful skin, soothing summertime skin and so much more!

All of these oils are SO GOOD!  You should get you some.  😉  When you do, use this link to order your PSK so you can be a Joyful Oiler too!  Make sure my numbers are in the enroller and sponsor fields—3471989—and when your order goes through you can expect a welcome email from me and some snail-mail with goodies shortly thereafter.  If you order *this month* (August 2016) you also get a bonus 12th oil, cedarwood, when you join as a wholesale member!  In case you missed my blog all about cedarwood earlier this month, it’s a great oil for restful sleep, gorgeous skin, promoting hair growth and more!  (We put it in our sleepy time roll-ons, shampoo and mascara!)

Herbs vs essential oils – What’s the difference?

When Young Living essential oils released their Vitality line of essential oils, a line of essential oils labeled specifically for dietary use, one of the questions a lot of people asked was “Why cook with herbal essential oils?  Why not just use the herbs themselves?”  This is a valid question.  In fact, when I was brand new to essential oils I thought the same thing, and you wouldn’t find essential oils in my cooking.  However, after learning a  thing or two I am now a big fan of using essential oils in my food, drinks etc.

First off, as I mentioned in a previous post, therapeutic grade essential oils are highly concentrated liquids extracted from the leaves, petals, roots, bark or peels of various aromatic plants, usually through gentle steam distillation.  They constitute the plant’s very essence, which is why they have the plant’s characteristic smell, and they also act as a plant’s “blood” so to speak, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the plant’s cells.  They keep the plant healthy and help fight off the stuff it doesn’t want, just as your immune system does for you.  The reason essential oil is so concentrated is because it takes a great deal of plant matter to get just a small amount of essential oil.  It takes dozens, sometimes even hundreds of a plant to get a single bottle of essential oil.  That’s why a single drop of essential oil goes a long way.  This is why you can add just one drop of Lemon Vitality essential oil to flavor a glass of water or a drop of dill essential oil in a veggie dip.  The flavor you get from essential oils packs a punch, and it doesn’t take much.

Secondly, let’s talk about frequency.  Quantum physics tells us that everything is essentially made up of energy at the quantum level, and as a result, everything you see (and even what you can’t see) has a frequency.  Frequency can be defined as a measurable rate of electrical energy that is constant between any two points.  Everything—whether it’s a person, a plant, a piano, or even an emotion—has a frequency.

Bruce Tainio of Tainio Technology in Cheney, Washington developed specialized equipment capable of measuring the biofrequency of humans and foods.  Measuring in Megahertz (MHz) he found that a healthy person has a frequency of around 62-68 MHz.  Unhealthy substances, lifestyles and—believe it or not—negative thoughts can cause dips in our frequency, and when it gets down low enough, our bodies start to show symptoms.  This is when illnesses can sometimes manifest.  It is so important for us to keep ourselves well and to keep our frequency up!

As I mentioned, lifestyle habits are a huge factor here.  Dried herbs have a frequency of 12-23 MHz, and that frequency goes up to 20-27 MHz in fresh herbs.  So the old adage that fresh is best is true!  However, this is where things get even more interesting.  Essential oils have a frequency between 52-320 MHz!  This means that—as far as frequency is concerned—even the lowest frequency oil is still higher and more beneficial to our bodies than their freshly picked counterparts.

Frequency, flavor and concentration aside, essential oils, unlike herbs, don’t have to be digested before they go to work in your body.  When you ingest food or herbs, your body first has to digest those foods, breaking them down before their nutrients can be assimilated.  Essential oils, on the other hand, do not have to be digested; their molecules are so teeny tiny that they are able to penetrate every cell of the human body in mere minutes, and many can even pass the blood-brain barrier.  This is because a single drop of essential contains approximately 400 million trillion molecules!  That is about 40,000 eo molecules for every cell in the human body.  Additionally, when you ingest a therapeutic grade essential oil, you are ingesting a plant’s concentrated life energy, complete with its micronutrients, oxygenating molecules and other therapeutic qualities.  Dried herbs and the like can lose as much as 90% of their nutrients and oxygenating properties.

So let’s recap.  Essential oils (when distilled properly from healthy, organic plants) are far more concentrated than herbs, have a higher biofrequency and do not need to go through the digestive process to work on our cells.  Please note that I am only referring to Young Living’s therapeutic grade essential oils labeled as dietary supplements, and not the essential oils you buy at the store; all oils are not created equal.  Please only ingest oils that 1) come from sources you know and trust 2) are specifically labeled for ingestion on the bottle and 3) are therapeutic grade and considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe) by the FDA.  Because of their Seed to Seal promise, Young Living essential oils meet all of those criteria.  If you would like more info on ingesting oils, you can read my past blog on the Vitality line of essential oils or you can contact me for more information.  To order oils, please use this link.  I hope you learned something new today.  Let’s connect soon!

What is essential oil? – 5 things you should know

What is essential oil?

Hi friends! Let’s talk about essential oils. What is essential oil and what does it do? I’m going to give you a run down on 5 things you should know about essential oils that will hopefully clear some things up for you, so let’s get started!

1. What are essential oils?

In a nutshell, essential oil is the vital and aromatic liquid extracted from plants. Essential oils come from many different flowers, trees, shrubs, roots and seeds. It’s usually extracted through steam distillation, but that depends on the type of plant being used. Rose essential oil, for example, is made from steam distilling huge quantities of rose petals, and orange essential oil is made from cold-pressing very large quantities of orange rinds.

2. Essential oils are highly concentrated!

It takes about 5,000 pounds to make just one kilo of rose essential oil, which translates to 22 lbs of rose petals to make a single 5 ml bottle of rose essential oil. Because it takes so much plant matter to make such a small amount of essential oil, these oils are very potent. One drop of essential oil contains approximately 40 million trillion molecules! Just so you know what that looks like numerically, that’s a 4 with 19 zeros after it. Crazy, right? I know that sounds like a made up number, but it’s true. To give you an idea of what that means for you, human bodies consist of around 100 trillion cells, so one drop of essential oil has enough molecules to deliver around 40,000 molecules of EO goodness to every one of the cells in our bodies. Essential oils are super concentrated, so a little goes a long way!

3. Essential oils are more than just a pretty smell.

Yes, they do smell amazing but there is more to the story than that. Essential oil is the lifeblood of the plant because the oil protects the plant from disease, provides oxygen and nutrients to the plant and helps it to fight off anything it doesn’t want. You can think of essential oil as the plant’s immune system. When you and I use therapeutic grade essential oils the trillions of teeny tiny molecules are quickly absorbed by our bodies and they immediately go to work at the cellular level, helping us to eliminate toxins in our bodies. Meanwhile, the fragrance of the oil works on the limbic system, the emotional processing center of the brain. The limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone balance which is why some oils can have a calming effect on our physiology while others seem to energize us. This is also why certain smells can trigger memories for you. The chemistry of essential oil is very complex. Each essential oil is made up of between 200 to 500 different bioconstituents, so each oil will have different effects on the different people and animals using them. But, having said all that, this does NOT apply to all essential oils out there because…

4. Not all essential oils are created equal.

I’ll say that again because it bears repeating. Not all essential oils are created equal. There are 4 different grades of essential that you should be aware of and they are 1) therapeutic grade (which is what I have been talking about) 2) “natural” oils 3) extended or altered oils and 4) synthetic or nature-identical oils. Therapeutic grade oils are oils that have been carefully distilled so that the therapeutic qualities of the plants are retained. Natural oils are real essential oil in the sense that they truly do come from plants, but they have failed to distill the plants properly resulting in essential oil that doesn’t contain any or just a few of the therapeutic compounds. Extended and altered oils are what make up a large percentage of the oils you find in stores—including health stores—and these oils often contain ingredients you don’t want to be inhaling or putting on your body. Often times there will be only a few drops of real essential oil in the bottle and the rest will be carrier oil, synthetic perfume or some other mystery liquid. The kicker is that they don’t have to tell you what those mystery ingredients are because these essential oils are “fragrance grade” and their ingredients are considered proprietary information by the FDA. The 4th grade of oils is synthetic grade, also considered “fragrance” by the FDA. Synthetic oils are created in laboratories to mimic certain scents, and while they may smell nice they do not contain any of nature’s health supporting qualities. Worse than that, they often contain toxins which can be hazardous to your health. Just say no to mystery oils! This is why…

5. You should always know and trust your essential oil source.

Because of the way essential oils are regulated, you can’t always tell what grade of essential oil you have just by looking at the bottle. The brand I used to buy from my local health food store had a USDA organic label on it, but I later learned that an oil can legally claim itself to be USDA organic if the oil itself is organic but that the company can add other non-organic ingredients to the oil to make it stretch that are nowhere near being organic, and they don’t have to mention it on the label because they too are regulated as “fragrance” by the FDA. (Mystery fragrances are exempt from the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act because they are considered “trade secrets” by the FDA.) Then there are companies who have trademarked phrases that they use on their bottles, like “certified pure therapeutic grade”, that are actually meaningless because it’s not a real 3rd party certification, it’s just a phrase trademarked by the company. That means that no matter how pure or therapeutic another company’s oil is, they can’t go get that certification because it’s not a real certification. It’s a clever but made up marketing tool.

So then, who do you trust? After doing tons and tons of research I placed my trust in Young Living Essential Oils. Young Living is the world leader in essential oils with over 20 years of expertise in harvesting and distilling plants that go above and beyond organic standards. Young Living has set the bar very high for the essential oil industry because of its Seed To Seal guarantee. Young Living plants its own carefully selected seeds on its own farms and then harvests and distills the plants so that the therapeutic qualities remain intact. They are very transparent in their practices and open up their world-wide farms, distilleries and bottling plants to the public so we can experience Seed To Seal in action. I have been to Young Living’s lavender farm in Mona, Utah and it was truly amazing. I got to help plant yarrow in the greenhouse and I watched the distillation of blue yarrow and juniper essential oils. I even got to tour the bottling plant, and everything was on the up and up. What other essential oil company offers that level of transparency?

Also, since Young Living has farms allover the world they are able to offer a huge selection of essential oils, well over 200 different oils choose from and more than 500 oil-infused products, everything from toothpaste to all-purpose household cleaner. If you’re curious about trying essential oils but want more information you can explore the rest of my website or if you’re ready to dive in and buy right now you can follow this link to grab your Premium Starter Kit from me right now. Most of us started with The Premium Starter Kit because it’s the best value, saving you around $170 versus buying everything separately at the retail price. Still have questions? Just ask me! Are you from southern California? Let’s grab a smoothie sometime and chat. I’m a north county San Diego native, but I’m allover the place. I hope to connect with you soon! You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, here on The Joyful Oilers website and on YouTube. Scroll down for links to all of my social media accounts.
