DIY All Natural Lavender Linen Spray Recipe

I love, love, LOVE making my own DIY linen sprays with my essential oils.  I use them to quickly freshen a room, my car, bed linens, towels, you name it.  One of the first DIY essential oil sprays I ever made was a sleepy time spray for my kiddos using lavender essential oil.  Sprays are really easy to make and you can play around with different oils, but for simplicity’s sake here is how you make a basic DIY lavender linen spray.

You will need:

The Process:

  1. Add 8-12 drops of lavender essential oil to a 2 oz glass spray bottle.
  2. Add a good squirt (about 1 tsp or so) of witch hazel to the bottle. (This acts as an emulsifier so that the water and essential oil can mix together.)
  3. Very carefully fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water. I like to use the small water dispenser that came with my Aria diffuser.
  4. Give it a good shake before every use. Spray your pillows, sheets, or room to your heart’s content. Enjoy!

Thanks for reading, friend!  By for now. 🙂

Essential Oils to Avoid During Pregnancy

Essential Oils to Avoid During Pregnancy
A lot of my friends are pregnant right now, and I have been getting a ton of questions about which essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy. I have been directing people to the book Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern, an excellent resource for pregnant women and moms of babies, toddlers and children.  And I’ve been sharing samples of one of my favorite baby/kid oils, Young Living’s Gentle Baby blend.  (You can read some of my thoughts on it on this blog entry here.)

Of course, using essential oils or not during pregnancy is a very personal choice, and there really is no definitive list of which ones should absolutely be avoided.  As with anything during pregnancy, take caution, do your research, and if something goes against your gut instinct then just avoid it for now. 🙂  That said, here is a list of what many people, including aromatherapists, herbalists and physicians say should be avoided during pregnancy:

Basil, Birch, Calamus, Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, Hyssop, Idaho Tansy,
Lavandin (a form of lavender, often sold in stores as lavender), Rosemary, Sage, Tarragon and Wintergreen should be avoided during pregnancy.

Additionally, peppermint should not be taken in the 3rd trimester as it may cause baby to flip!
Clary Sage has been known to cause contractions, so do not use that until you are in the early stages of labor and you are indeed full term and under a doula or doctor’s care. This is a favorite oil to gift to expecting mamas at 41 weeks and beyond.

Oils which many mamas choose to avoid using on babies are Eucalyptus, Basil, Juniper, Peppermint, Hyssop and Wintergreen.

Again, *you* are the mom or soon to be mommy, so it is ultimately your choice. Before you embark in your essential oils journey, you may even want to consult your healthcare provider. Another resource which is extremely helpful (for EVERYONE, not just pregnant mamas) is the Essential Oils Desk Reference by Life Science Publishing.  It is my essential oil bible!  I flip through it for everything!  Feel free to ask questions of other “oily” moms!  We are everywhere and growing in numbers! Do your research, read and if you’re so inclined pray for guidance.

Congratulations, mama! I hope you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. At FULL price the kit is a steal, so getting $41 back is kind of amazing, and doesn’t happen very often.  Friends, the oils in the PSK can help support your sleep, they can help your KIDS sleep, they can help you manage your stress more easily, they can help you with that afternoon slump, they can help support your immune system (which is extra helpful this time of year), they can help support your digestion, they can help balance out your emotions, soooo sooooo many good things.

When you get your kit you are going to get a cool mist diffuser, 11 essential oils (plus a bonus 12th oil for starting in October), 2 packets of NingXia red goji berry juice, 10 samples, 10 mini travel bottles, a roller fitment, literature, a wholesale membership so you can re-order at 24% off and when you sign up with me you will also get exclusive access to The Joyful Oiler secret Facebook group where I post educational videos I make and lots of great content for you.  If you’re local to me (Southern California) you will also get my personal concierge service, so when your kit arrives I will go to your house and unbox it with you and give a mini oils 101 class with it.  The oils can’t help if you don’t know how to use them, so this is key!

Young Living Premium Starter Kit with Vitality 2016

The pic above is what you’ll get with your kit, except the diffuser will be a different one. 🙂 Allow me to introduce to you each kit oil and what it has personally helped me and my family with, just so you can have a basic idea of what they can do for you.

Lavender– We use this in our diffusers every night at bedtime. Knocks us right out! I also use it on my kids’ booboos and on our skin.

Frankincense– We use it for grounding and meditation. I also like to use it when I have pent up nervous energy, and it has been amazing for my skin. I get compliments all the time, which is huge for me because I had terrible skin problems growing up.

R.C.– This one helps with respiratory comfort. It has 3 kinds of eucalyptus, cypress, really good things. It has helped support our lungs during times when we were not 100% if you catch my drift. It is a Winter MUST have, especially if you have school aged kids!

Purification– This is what I now use for all natural deodorant. No aluminum and chemicals under these underarms! This neutralizes odors like no ones business. Husband just cooked fish? No prob. Diffuse Purification. Stinky gym shoes? No match for this stuff. Oh, and it has citronella in it, so it’s great to wear when you’re out camping or hiking. 😉

PanAway– This is my go to for when I’ve been carrying a heavy child in line for hours at Disneyland, or if I’ve gone to the gym, or if I’ve been blogging or social media-ing for hours on end. It’s just so good on the muscles, joints and the back, you guys. My husband and I use it in coconut oil as the most amazing DIY massage oil ever. It has wintergreen, clove, helichrysum, peppermint, all the good things for supporting those muscles, bones and joints!

Stress Away– I used to be terrified of driving. I had 2 horrible wrecks when I was a teen, and the fear carried into my 20s and early 30s. When I got on the freeway to drive my kids I would tense up. I’d white knuckle the steering while, I’d start breathing faster, my heart would race, my palms would sweat. But then my friend showed me Stress Away. It physically works with the central nervous system to help calm you down. I put it on every morning while the kids are getting ready for school and it makes me a calm, centered mama, and I can drive without fear now, which has been revolutionary for me. Oh, and it smells like a dreamy, tropical vacation. SWOON.

Thieves  Vitality– Thieves smells like Christmas, and that’s what attracted me to it at first, but then I learned how amazingly well this blend works for supporting the immune system. When there is a lot of ick going around at school, we put this in our diffusers at home, and my kids’ teacher diffuse it in their classrooms. When we’re not feeling 100%, it goes diluted on to our feet or taken in veggie capsules. It’s good stuff!

Digize Vitality– When I travel and I’m going to be eating things my body isn’t used to, Digize is in my carry on bag. Always. It really works to support the digestive system to bring balance, whether you’re struggling to “go” or if you’re in the opposite direction and going too much, ha. It has also been incredible in supporting my husband and some issues he was having with his kidneys last winter. It’s a great oil for a lot of things, not just digestion.

Peppermint Vitality– Peppermint is my go to when I need perking up, because it wakes up my mind and body. It supports the circulatory system and the digestive system, and it is great for relieving occasional head tension (like that time I quit coffee cold turkey!) It’s also awesome for curbing sugar cravings, which has been helpful for me after the kids go to bed.

Lemon Vitality– Lemon is a great oil for detoxing the cells of body, which is great because no matter how intentional you are about keeping toxins out of your body, it’s just inevitable in this modern world we live in. Lemon helps pulls those toxins out so you can flush them down the toilet. 😉 I also use this as an all natural, non toxic alternative to Goo Gone. Whenever we go to Trader Joe’s or Target or Sprouts the cashiers always give my kids stickers, and those stickers always end up on my car windows, and when I remove them there is always sticky gunk. But lemon essential oil gets it right out, and I’m not worried about my kids inhaling the fumes. 🙂

Copaiba Vitality– This one is my most favorite oil for the in winter when I wake up and my throat catches me off guard with some random discomfort. I bust out the raw, organic honey, scoop out a spoonful and drip a drop of copaiba on it, then down it goes and better I feel. Copaiba is also known as a magnifier, so it can intensify any oil you use it with. We like to add it to our Panaway coconut massage oil. And did I mention it’s incredibly moisturizing to the skin?

This month you also get a bonus 12th oil:

Oregano– This is yet another winter staple, and one of the first oils I bought outside of the starter kit, so the fact that you get it automatically for free when you grab your kit this month is kind of amazing. This is another for immune system support. This one is great in DIY capsules along with Thieves, Lemon and Frankincense Vitality oils when you’re not feeling 100%, or if you have been around people who aren’t feeling 100%. I could tell you stories about this one, but I can’t because the FDA won’t let me. Boo.

So those are the 12 oils that will come to your door when you grab your kit from me today.  Plus you’re going to get 10% from Young Living and $25 back from me, so do it already! 🙂 Come see what nearly 2 million other Young Living customers around the world are all raving about.  Like I told you before, it took me years to cave and buy my kit, and once I had it I kicked myself for not getting it sooner.  Like….where have you been all my life?  If you are a human being on Earth, then you need oils. Period.  And I am not kidding.  Use this link to grab your kit right now and I will take care of the rest.  Got questions?  Connect with me on any of my social media accounts below. Thanks friends!

Gentle Baby Essential Oil – For Sleep, Skincare and more during Pregnancy, Infancy and Beyond

gentle-baby-essential-oil-waldorf-baby-doll

When I was pregnant with my Jeffrey bean (after struggling a bit and miscarrying) I wanted to make sure I did everything “right.”  In my research I learned some disturbing facts about personal care products, and I was surprised to learn that many products marketed to mommies for babies (like baby lotions) contain some pretty yucky ingredients.  I’m talking things like propylene glycol, parabens, triclosan, 1,4-dioxane and ethylated surfactants. You may recall some of these from my recent post on deodorant.

Back then I was still using grocery store essential oils because I didn’t know any better, and as far as baby products went, I bought the safest stuff I could find at my local health food store.  If I could go back in time I would find 20-something-year old me and say “Hey, girl!  Here’s some Gentle Baby essential oil blend and cold-pressed, organic coconut oil.  You’re welcome.”

Crystal-37-weeks-pregnant-with-Jeffrey-March-1-2009

Gentle Baby is profoundly comforting to both pregnant women and babies alike, and I so wish I had found it sooner.  Its soothing aroma is great for relaxation and stress management during pregnancy, and many babies (and children) love it for sleep.  My 5 year old daughter loves this one at bedtime, or anytime she needs comfort.  I have used it in my diffuser for sleep too, when I’ve run out of lavender.  It smells divine, like a freshly bathed, snuggly baby.  It’s a lovely oil to diffuse during a baby shower and, for me and many others, it powerfully evokes the memory of our own cuddly babies.  I don’t know how they got a mix of a bunch of flowers to smell so much like babies, but it seriously does.  So if you catch the “baby fever”, don’t say I didn’t warn you. 😉

The scent magically transports me back to when I was a brand new mommy, with my squishy, cloth-diapered newborn in his Yellow Submarine themed nursery.  We talked about why smells can do that to us in a previous post.  Essential oils go to work on the limbic system, the emotional processing center of the brain.  The olfactory bulb has intimate access to the amygdala, which processes emotion, and the hippocampus, which is responsible for learned associations, so certain smells can instantly call up memories and evoke powerful emotions or reactions.  I have to be honest here.  Looking at these pictures of my now 7 year old son as a cloth-diapered baby while smelling Gentle Baby for inspiration completely reduced me to a blubbering puddle of tears; my husband came downstairs while I was writing that last paragraph and I think I kinda freaked him out.  If you’re reading this, sorry babe.  I’m ok now. 😉

Sigh…they grow up so, so fast, but I digress…

Gentle Baby is also wonderful for skin support.  I initially bought it to reduce the appearance of my post-baby stretch marks and wrinkles, and many mamas I know use it as an all natural solution to soothe diaper rashes and dry, chapped baby skin.  For babies, dilute heavily with coconut oil or other carrier oil of choice and apply as needed.  Remember, therapeutic grade essential is highly concentrated, so a single drop goes a long way.

Any doulas reading this?  This essential oil is perfect for women to have during pregnancy, labor and delivery.  Mamas-to-be love this oil (when mixed with a carrier such as V-6 or coconut oil) during prenatal massage for relieving stress and anxiety, and it can also help create an atmosphere of serenity.  Bonus, it can help prevent scarring.  Before and during labor it can also be massaged on the perineum to help it stretch for easier birthing.

Gentle Baby is an essential oil blend combining geranium, rosewood, lemon, lavender, jasmine, Roman chamomile, bergamot, ylang ylang, palmarosa and rose essential oils.  Geranium has been used in skincare for centuries because of its ability to support skin tissue and nerves.  Rosewood is also soothing and nourishing to skin and can enhance the skin’s elasticity.  Lemon is a great support to the circulatory and lymphatic systems of the body, and its fragrance is invigorating.  Lavender is considered the “Swiss Army knife” of essential oils because it’s beneficial to most of our body systems, including the skin, plus it is relaxing and grounding.  Jasmine is great for sensitive skin and exhaustion and Roman chamomile combats restlessness.  Bergamot is both calming and uplifting and fabulous for melting away stress.  Ylang ylang is also relaxing, restoring confidence and equilibrium.  Palmarosa is moisturizing to the skin and helps to reduce nervous tension.  Rose can reduce scarring and promotes elasticity of the skin, which is why it’s been used to beautify skin for thousands of years.

Please note: this essential oil blend does contain lemon and bergamot—photosensitive citrus oils—so it can cause the skin to be more sensitive to sunlight.  To be safe, it is best to avoid direct sunlight while wearing this blend or thoroughly washing it off before exposing the skin to UV rays.

For more information about Gentle Baby essential oil or to learn more about the safe use of essential oils during pregnancy, labor, infancy and beyond, I highly recommend reading the book Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern.  It would make a sweet gift for a mama-to-be, along with a Premium Starter Kit (which you can buy here.)  Trust, every mama needs oils in her tool box.  Anyway, thanks for taking a trip down memory lane with me.  I hope you learned something new!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me any time.  Until next time.
