How Thieves Essential Oil Got its Name and How I Use It To Stay Healthy

how-did-thieves-essential-oil-get-its-name

Labor day is already a few days away, most kids are back in school, people are getting back into their routines, the stores are filling up with pumpkins and fall decor and (depending on where you live) the weather may be starting to cool off some.  For many this time of year also signifies the start of something else, something less desirable: the spreading of germs.  Thankfully, there’s an oil for that.  Actually, there are several, but today we’re going to talk about Thieves.

Thieves essential oil is my go-to for maintaining good health in our household.  A powerful blend of cinnamon, clove, rosemary, eucalyptus and lemon essential oils, Thieves oil is amazing at supporting the immune system.  Its name was inspired by the legend of four French thieves in the 15th century who wore a special blend of rosemary, clove and other botanicals while they robbed the dead and dying.  The story goes, when the thieves were caught they were offered a lesser punishment if they would divulge to the king the secret to their immunity, despite being exposed to a highly infectious, deadly disease.  In 1991, Young Living founder D. Gary Young researched these ingredients while studying the history of essential oils in London and recounts the following about the history of Thieves:

“I must tell you that I have read 17 different versions of the Thieves story,” says Gary, “Some that claim there were four thieves and others that claim there were 40! Many of these legends took place in the 15th century, but still others put the date in the 18thcentury. The formulas also varied from one story to the next, but through my research, I was led to four key botanicals that were mentioned again and again. Those ingredients were clove, cinnamon, rosemary, and lemon—four of the same ingredients that make up Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend today.

“The legends speculate that the thieves believed that wearing this special combination of botanicals provided protection while they were stealing. French authorities recognized that there was such value in this mixture that upon the thieves’ capture, they received a more merciful punishment on condition that they divulge the ingredients in their secret formula to the king.

“To round out my modern Thieves formula and add another element of protection, I included eucalyptus radiata, which would have been rare to find in those days.”

As I mentioned in a previous post, disease cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment, and Thieves essential oil help to create a highly oxygenated environment that is unfriendly to bacteria, viruses, fungi and other nasty things.  Thieves essential oil can be used aromatically and topically, and it also comes in a Vitality version to be used internally as a supplement.

Because of the spicy cinnamon and clove essential oils, Thieves is considered a “hot” oil and should be diluted with a carrier oil (coconut, almond, avocado, grapeseed, V-6 etc) when used on children so as to not irritate their sensitive skin.  When my kids have been around coughing, sneezing children we bust out our Thieves essential oil.  Before bed, I rub diluted Thieves on the bottoms of their feet and put some Thieves in their diffusers.  I am a big DIYer, so I also make my own Thieves spray that I carry in my bag.  During “cold season” I bring it with me to school and before my son goes into class I spray him with it.

At the first sign that I may be coming down with something, I take Thieves Vitality in a veggie capsule and I drink it down with water, or I add a single drop to my daily NingXia Red shot in the morning.  Thieves is also great for oral health; I used it to numb my inflamed gums around an impacted wisdom tooth, and many use it (diluted of course) on the gums of teething babies.  In a 1997 study conducted at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, a 90% reduction of airborne microorganisms was shown after diffusing Thieves for just 12 minutes, and 99.3% were gone after 20 minutes!

Thieves is a blend I love in my downstairs diffuser in cooler weather not only for its immune system supporting qualities but also because it smells wonderfully like the holidays.  The warm, spicy aroma goes to work on the limbic system of the brain and calls to mind cozy fall and winter memories.  I think of my mom’s famous spiral ham covered in cloves and freshly baked Christmas cookies.  When my little nephew wants his mama to add Thieves to their diffuser he asks her for “pumpkin pie.”  The cinnamon and clove really shine in this blend.  It’s a much healthier alternative to the toxic fumes that come out of most scented candles and wickless candles these days, and it pulls double duty since it also cleans the air and boosts immunity.

Thieves Vitality essential oil comes in the current version of the Premium Starter Kit, along with 10 other essential oils.  Thieves essential oil was the first oil I tried from Young Living that absolutely sold me on becoming a wholesale member, not only because of its heavenly smell but because it is SO effective.  It is so wonderful that a whole line of Thieves products was created so people can replace their toxic household cleaners and personal care products with the power of Thieves, but we’ll talk about that another day.

Young Living Essential Oils Premium Starter Kit – Why should you get one?

The best way to get started with Young Living essential oils is to grab yourself a Premium Starter Kit (PSK.)  This is how all of the Joyful Oilers got started, because it’s by far the best value, saving you over $150 versus buying everything separately at the retail price.  Plus when you buy a PSK you automatically become a wholesale member of Young Living, which simply means you get to enjoy wholesale pricing AND (***if you want to***) you are also eligible to participate in Essential Rewards and earning commissions when you share oils.  These last two are totally optional however, and many Joyful Oilers become wholesale members just to get the discount.  Totally fine!

What comes in the kit?

The kit comes with a diffuser (you choose which one!), 11 of the most popular essential oils, a roller, samples, mini bottles for travel, 2 packets of NingXia Red antioxidant berry juice, awesome literature and more!  (See the pic above!) Plus, when you enroll through a Joyful Oiler, you get access to our FB oil groups and an informative handbook to help you get started! 🎉

These are the oils that come in the current PSK and—in a nutshell—what they can do for YOU.

Thieves – a.k.a. the healthy-keeper.  It helps clean the air, boosts immunity, makes our digestive systems work their best, and it basically smells like Christmas.
Purification – gets rid of bad odors and also cleanses the air. It feels amazing rubbed on the outside of your throat when you need extra support in the Winter. I use it as all natural, non-toxic deodorant and I love it in our laundry!
Copaiba – supports the body’s response to injury/irritation, is a driving oil (enhances other oils!), regulates my natural immune responses, can be soothing, promotes youthful appearance from the inside out. ☺️
Frankincense – Incredible for my skin and immune system, eases occasional and minor tension/anxiety, promotes feelings of calmness and balance, and (super awesome) it was given to baby Jesus as a gift. This is a great one to use during prayer and meditation practices, or for a good night’s rest.
RC – contains 3 different kinds of eucalyptus which have naturally occurring eucalyptol (really good stuff), inspires and uplifts before working out, creates a comforting environment, and is excellent for respiratory support.
DiGize – supports a super healthy digestive system, alleviates nausea and upset/sour stomach, great for occasional irregularity or upset tummies, relief from occasional heartburn
Lemon – naturally highlights hair, all natural de-greaser, maintains energy levels, helps oily skin, calluses, cellulite, detoxing your body, weight loss. The works!
Stress Away – exactly what it says. We roll it onto our wrists and the back of our necks anytime we want it. ☺️ This one makes for one happy mama on busy weekday mornings and in traffic on the crazy, California freeways. And did I mention it smells like key lime pie? Oh yes.
Peppermint – part of the trio that helps me enjoy springtime outdoors, keeps my head happy when it’s under pressure, supports the digestive system, promotes proper nasal and respiratory function, helps curb sugar cravings, and helps me feel more awake and energized! I’m obsessed.
Panaway – so many types of relief. Helps with occasional head discomfort, everyday joint and muscle soreness, and that “time of the month” cramp sucky-ness. A must have for the gym.
Lavender – “the Swiss Army knife of essential oils.” We use it for enjoying the springtime outdoors. It’s also great for relaxation, sleepy cream, a calm environment for kids and grownups, healthy, beautiful skin, soothing summertime skin and so much more!

All of these oils are SO GOOD!  You should get you some.  😉  When you do, use this link to order your PSK so you can be a Joyful Oiler too!  Make sure my numbers are in the enroller and sponsor fields—3471989—and when your order goes through you can expect a welcome email from me and some snail-mail with goodies shortly thereafter.  If you order *this month* (August 2016) you also get a bonus 12th oil, cedarwood, when you join as a wholesale member!  In case you missed my blog all about cedarwood earlier this month, it’s a great oil for restful sleep, gorgeous skin, promoting hair growth and more!  (We put it in our sleepy time roll-ons, shampoo and mascara!)

Gentle Baby Essential Oil – For Sleep, Skincare and more during Pregnancy, Infancy and Beyond

gentle-baby-essential-oil-waldorf-baby-doll

When I was pregnant with my Jeffrey bean (after struggling a bit and miscarrying) I wanted to make sure I did everything “right.”  In my research I learned some disturbing facts about personal care products, and I was surprised to learn that many products marketed to mommies for babies (like baby lotions) contain some pretty yucky ingredients.  I’m talking things like propylene glycol, parabens, triclosan, 1,4-dioxane and ethylated surfactants. You may recall some of these from my recent post on deodorant.

Back then I was still using grocery store essential oils because I didn’t know any better, and as far as baby products went, I bought the safest stuff I could find at my local health food store.  If I could go back in time I would find 20-something-year old me and say “Hey, girl!  Here’s some Gentle Baby essential oil blend and cold-pressed, organic coconut oil.  You’re welcome.”

Crystal-37-weeks-pregnant-with-Jeffrey-March-1-2009

Gentle Baby is profoundly comforting to both pregnant women and babies alike, and I so wish I had found it sooner.  Its soothing aroma is great for relaxation and stress management during pregnancy, and many babies (and children) love it for sleep.  My 5 year old daughter loves this one at bedtime, or anytime she needs comfort.  I have used it in my diffuser for sleep too, when I’ve run out of lavender.  It smells divine, like a freshly bathed, snuggly baby.  It’s a lovely oil to diffuse during a baby shower and, for me and many others, it powerfully evokes the memory of our own cuddly babies.  I don’t know how they got a mix of a bunch of flowers to smell so much like babies, but it seriously does.  So if you catch the “baby fever”, don’t say I didn’t warn you. 😉

The scent magically transports me back to when I was a brand new mommy, with my squishy, cloth-diapered newborn in his Yellow Submarine themed nursery.  We talked about why smells can do that to us in a previous post.  Essential oils go to work on the limbic system, the emotional processing center of the brain.  The olfactory bulb has intimate access to the amygdala, which processes emotion, and the hippocampus, which is responsible for learned associations, so certain smells can instantly call up memories and evoke powerful emotions or reactions.  I have to be honest here.  Looking at these pictures of my now 7 year old son as a cloth-diapered baby while smelling Gentle Baby for inspiration completely reduced me to a blubbering puddle of tears; my husband came downstairs while I was writing that last paragraph and I think I kinda freaked him out.  If you’re reading this, sorry babe.  I’m ok now. 😉

Sigh…they grow up so, so fast, but I digress…

Gentle Baby is also wonderful for skin support.  I initially bought it to reduce the appearance of my post-baby stretch marks and wrinkles, and many mamas I know use it as an all natural solution to soothe diaper rashes and dry, chapped baby skin.  For babies, dilute heavily with coconut oil or other carrier oil of choice and apply as needed.  Remember, therapeutic grade essential is highly concentrated, so a single drop goes a long way.

Any doulas reading this?  This essential oil is perfect for women to have during pregnancy, labor and delivery.  Mamas-to-be love this oil (when mixed with a carrier such as V-6 or coconut oil) during prenatal massage for relieving stress and anxiety, and it can also help create an atmosphere of serenity.  Bonus, it can help prevent scarring.  Before and during labor it can also be massaged on the perineum to help it stretch for easier birthing.

Gentle Baby is an essential oil blend combining geranium, rosewood, lemon, lavender, jasmine, Roman chamomile, bergamot, ylang ylang, palmarosa and rose essential oils.  Geranium has been used in skincare for centuries because of its ability to support skin tissue and nerves.  Rosewood is also soothing and nourishing to skin and can enhance the skin’s elasticity.  Lemon is a great support to the circulatory and lymphatic systems of the body, and its fragrance is invigorating.  Lavender is considered the “Swiss Army knife” of essential oils because it’s beneficial to most of our body systems, including the skin, plus it is relaxing and grounding.  Jasmine is great for sensitive skin and exhaustion and Roman chamomile combats restlessness.  Bergamot is both calming and uplifting and fabulous for melting away stress.  Ylang ylang is also relaxing, restoring confidence and equilibrium.  Palmarosa is moisturizing to the skin and helps to reduce nervous tension.  Rose can reduce scarring and promotes elasticity of the skin, which is why it’s been used to beautify skin for thousands of years.

Please note: this essential oil blend does contain lemon and bergamot—photosensitive citrus oils—so it can cause the skin to be more sensitive to sunlight.  To be safe, it is best to avoid direct sunlight while wearing this blend or thoroughly washing it off before exposing the skin to UV rays.

For more information about Gentle Baby essential oil or to learn more about the safe use of essential oils during pregnancy, labor, infancy and beyond, I highly recommend reading the book Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern.  It would make a sweet gift for a mama-to-be, along with a Premium Starter Kit (which you can buy here.)  Trust, every mama needs oils in her tool box.  Anyway, thanks for taking a trip down memory lane with me.  I hope you learned something new!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me any time.  Until next time.
