When Young Living essential oils released their Vitality line of essential oils, a line of essential oils labeled specifically for dietary use, one of the questions a lot of people asked was “Why cook with herbal essential oils? Why not just use the herbs themselves?” This is a valid question. In fact, when I was brand new to essential oils I thought the same thing, and you wouldn’t find essential oils in my cooking. However, after learning a thing or two I am now a big fan of using essential oils in my food, drinks etc.
First off, as I mentioned in a previous post, therapeutic grade essential oils are highly concentrated liquids extracted from the leaves, petals, roots, bark or peels of various aromatic plants, usually through gentle steam distillation. They constitute the plant’s very essence, which is why they have the plant’s characteristic smell, and they also act as a plant’s “blood” so to speak, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the plant’s cells. They keep the plant healthy and help fight off the stuff it doesn’t want, just as your immune system does for you. The reason essential oil is so concentrated is because it takes a great deal of plant matter to get just a small amount of essential oil. It takes dozens, sometimes even hundreds of a plant to get a single bottle of essential oil. That’s why a single drop of essential oil goes a long way. This is why you can add just one drop of Lemon Vitality essential oil to flavor a glass of water or a drop of dill essential oil in a veggie dip. The flavor you get from essential oils packs a punch, and it doesn’t take much.
Secondly, let’s talk about frequency. Quantum physics tells us that everything is essentially made up of energy at the quantum level, and as a result, everything you see (and even what you can’t see) has a frequency. Frequency can be defined as a measurable rate of electrical energy that is constant between any two points. Everything—whether it’s a person, a plant, a piano, or even an emotion—has a frequency.
Bruce Tainio of Tainio Technology in Cheney, Washington developed specialized equipment capable of measuring the biofrequency of humans and foods. Measuring in Megahertz (MHz) he found that a healthy person has a frequency of around 62-68 MHz. Unhealthy substances, lifestyles and—believe it or not—negative thoughts can cause dips in our frequency, and when it gets down low enough, our bodies start to show symptoms. This is when illnesses can sometimes manifest. It is so important for us to keep ourselves well and to keep our frequency up!
As I mentioned, lifestyle habits are a huge factor here. Dried herbs have a frequency of 12-23 MHz, and that frequency goes up to 20-27 MHz in fresh herbs. So the old adage that fresh is best is true! However, this is where things get even more interesting. Essential oils have a frequency between 52-320 MHz! This means that—as far as frequency is concerned—even the lowest frequency oil is still higher and more beneficial to our bodies than their freshly picked counterparts.
Frequency, flavor and concentration aside, essential oils, unlike herbs, don’t have to be digested before they go to work in your body. When you ingest food or herbs, your body first has to digest those foods, breaking them down before their nutrients can be assimilated. Essential oils, on the other hand, do not have to be digested; their molecules are so teeny tiny that they are able to penetrate every cell of the human body in mere minutes, and many can even pass the blood-brain barrier. This is because a single drop of essential contains approximately 400 million trillion molecules! That is about 40,000 eo molecules for every cell in the human body. Additionally, when you ingest a therapeutic grade essential oil, you are ingesting a plant’s concentrated life energy, complete with its micronutrients, oxygenating molecules and other therapeutic qualities. Dried herbs and the like can lose as much as 90% of their nutrients and oxygenating properties.
So let’s recap. Essential oils (when distilled properly from healthy, organic plants) are far more concentrated than herbs, have a higher biofrequency and do not need to go through the digestive process to work on our cells. Please note that I am only referring to Young Living’s therapeutic grade essential oils labeled as dietary supplements, and not the essential oils you buy at the store; all oils are not created equal. Please only ingest oils that 1) come from sources you know and trust 2) are specifically labeled for ingestion on the bottle and 3) are therapeutic grade and considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe) by the FDA.
