Cedarwood essential oil is steam distilled from the bark of Cedar Wood trees, which typically grow at high altitudes in cold climates. Because cedarwood essential oil is so versatile, it has been used to support wellness for millennia. It was mentioned several times in the Bible, it has been used in traditional medicine and as incense in Tibet, and the ancient Egyptians even used it during their embalming process.
The key chemical constituents of cedarwood essential oil are Alpha-Himachalene, Beta-Himachalene, Gamma-Himachalene and Delta-Cadinene. Cedarwood essential oil is also high in sesquiterpenes. Ok, that’s great, but what does that mean for you? Sesquiterpene molecules deliver oxygen molecules to cells, like hemoglobin does in our blood, and oxygenated cells are healthy cells. Sesquiterpenes have also been known to erase or deprogram miswritten codes in the DNA. Our DNA codes can sometimes get messed up when we are exposed to environmental toxins from unhealthy foods, pesticides, plastics and other harmful substances, and this is when we can become susceptible to illness. This is why sesquiterpenes are our friends, and cedarwood essential oil has them in abundance! Also, since the molecules are so tiny (there are around 400 million trillion molecules in a drop of essential oil) they can even pass the blood brain barrier where they can help support healthy brain function. I like to diffuse cedarwood to help me focus and concentrate during mental tasks.
When used aromatically, cedarwood essential oil stimulates the limbic region of the brain, the emotional center where our feelings are processed. This is why it can be beneficial to you when you want to release negative emotions that are no longer serving you. Cedarwood also stimulates the pineal gland, which releases melatonin, a hormone which can help promote rest and relaxation. This makes cedarwood essential oil an excellent choice for diffusing at night before bedtime. I personally like to mix it with lavender in my diffuser.
Cedarwood is not only celebrated for its calming properties (hello, squirelly kids, I’m talking to you), but also for its purifying effects. It provides wonderful skin support, helping to promote radiant, blemish-free skin and it provides great support to the lymphatic system of the body, helping you to more efficiently rid yourself of toxins and other waste.
Cedarwood essential oil is also highly effective at stimulating hair follicles and increasing circulation to the areas where it’s applied, which is why it is great for growing long, luscious lashes or helping your favorite guy (or gal) combat thinning hair. Hello, long, lovely locks! For your lashes, just add a drop to your tube of mascara and gently swish it around the sides of the tube. You can apply the cedarwoord oil directly to the scalp to help stimulate hair growth or you can add several drops to a bottle of your favorite shampoo. Remember, cedarwood is chock-full of oxygenating molecules. Do you know what doesn’t thrive in an oxygenated environment? Bacteria. So there’s that. Another great reason to add it to your tube of mascara!
So let’s recap. Cedarwood essential is rich in oxygenating, sesquiterpene molecules which help to support overall wellness and brain health. They are extremely versatile and can be used to:
- support restful sleep
- help calm
- support focused attention
- stimulate hair growth
- cleanse and purify
- balance oily skin
- provide skin support for occasional blemishes
- soothe irritated skin
- provide respiratory support
- support the lymphatic system
- ground during yoga or meditation
- and so much more!
