Einkorn Flour – Young Living’s Alternative to Modern Wheat Flour

If you’re here, you’re probably aware that Young Living is the world-leader in essential oils, but did you also know that Young Living’s offerings go far beyond essential oils?  Young Living’s farms produce plants which go into a number of wellness supporting products, including non-toxic cleaning products for your household, personal care products (ie: toothpaste, shampoo, face wash, lotions etc), essential oil infused supplements and even food.

Einkorn wheat is one of the many plants grown at Young Living’s farm in Mona, Utah, where you’ll find nearly 1,400 acres of pristine land filled with aromatic herbs and flowers.  Einkorn is known as the oldest variety of wheat, the original “staff-of-life” grain referred to in the Bible, so it has a completely different genetic makeup than modern day wheat.  Einkorn is not hybridized like modern wheat is.  It has only 14 chromosomes (versus modern wheat’s 42) which changes its gluten structure making Einkorn much easier to digest.

Modern wheat has gone beyond just hybridization and is now being contaminated by genetically modified varieties.  Ever wonder why so many people have food allergies and sensitivities these days?  One reason is because modern “food” has become unrecognizable to the human body and is treated as a foreign substance, causing inflammation, resulting in disease.  Coupled with the GMO takeover of the modern food supply in the US, hybridized wheat has wreaked havoc on public health.  It’s no wonder people are sicker than ever.

Recognizing the need for easier-to-digest alternatives to modern wheat flour, D. Gary Young took Einkorn grain, ground it up and brought Einkorn Flour to the table.  You can substitute Einkorn flour for wheat flour in a 1:1 ratio, using it wherever flour is called for.  (Pro tip: Einkorn flour doesn’t absorb as much liquid as the other stuff, so try reducing the liquid in your recipes by about 20%.)

Why use Young Living’s Einkorn flour instead of conventional flour?

  • Einkorn is considered more nutritious than modern wheat, based on the higher level of protein, essential fatty acids, phosphorous, potassium, pyridoxine, and beta-carotene.
  • Einkorn only has 14 chromosomes, so it has a different gluten structure and is easier to digest than modern day wheat.
  • Einkorn is a hulled wheat, whereas modern wheats are not.  The hull can protect the grain from stray chemical contamination and insects.
  • Einkorn offers higher vitamin B6 content, twice the vitamin A, four times more beta-carotene and lutein, and five times more riboflavin.
  • Einkorn is very low in gluten, and the gluten that is there is in a form that is easier to digest.
  • Unlike most wheat flour alternatives which contain weird ingredients like xanthan gum (a thickener derived from GMO corn), the only ingredient in Young Living’s Einkorn Flour is whole grain Einkorn Flour, backed by Young Living’s Seed to Seal practices which exceed organic standards for purity and sustainability.
  • Einkorn wheat is not hybridized.  It is a true, ancient grain.  It is grown just as nature intended in its pure, original form.
  • Young Living’s Einkorn is grown on pristine land without the use of harmful pesticides and Agrichemicals, resulting in a pure, clean product healthy enough for the whole family.

Disclaimer: Given all that, I should mention that Einkorn flour is not gluten free, and whether or not it is suitable for people with Celiac or other gluten-allergies remains to be seen.  There is hope, however, but please proceed with caution.  The gluten in Einkorn has a different genetic structure, so many people who have difficulty digesting the proteins found in most gluten can digest Einkorn with no trouble.  As a person who is not allergic to gluten but is sensitive to its effects (mainly lethargy and bloating) I can say that I have no problems when I use Einkorn flour.  My family has happily made the switch and it has been wonderful for us.  I plan on sharing some of my Einkorn flour recipes as the cooler weather makes its appearance this fall, so stay tuned!

If you’d like to try Einkorn flour for yourself, you can use this link to purchase some.  The wholesale price is for people who have purchased a Premium Starter Kit, so if you’d like more info about that just let me know.  You can scroll down for my contact info.  For those of you already using Einkorn flour, what has been your favorite use so far?  Let me know in the comments!

Young Living Essential Oils Premium Starter Kit – Why should you get one?

The best way to get started with Young Living essential oils is to grab yourself a Premium Starter Kit (PSK.)  This is how all of the Joyful Oilers got started, because it’s by far the best value, saving you over $150 versus buying everything separately at the retail price.  Plus when you buy a PSK you automatically become a wholesale member of Young Living, which simply means you get to enjoy wholesale pricing AND (***if you want to***) you are also eligible to participate in Essential Rewards and earning commissions when you share oils.  These last two are totally optional however, and many Joyful Oilers become wholesale members just to get the discount.  Totally fine!

What comes in the kit?

The kit comes with a diffuser (you choose which one!), 11 of the most popular essential oils, a roller, samples, mini bottles for travel, 2 packets of NingXia Red antioxidant berry juice, awesome literature and more!  (See the pic above!) Plus, when you enroll through a Joyful Oiler, you get access to our FB oil groups and an informative handbook to help you get started! 🎉

These are the oils that come in the current PSK and—in a nutshell—what they can do for YOU.

Thieves – a.k.a. the healthy-keeper.  It helps clean the air, boosts immunity, makes our digestive systems work their best, and it basically smells like Christmas.
Purification – gets rid of bad odors and also cleanses the air. It feels amazing rubbed on the outside of your throat when you need extra support in the Winter. I use it as all natural, non-toxic deodorant and I love it in our laundry!
Copaiba – supports the body’s response to injury/irritation, is a driving oil (enhances other oils!), regulates my natural immune responses, can be soothing, promotes youthful appearance from the inside out. ☺️
Frankincense – Incredible for my skin and immune system, eases occasional and minor tension/anxiety, promotes feelings of calmness and balance, and (super awesome) it was given to baby Jesus as a gift. This is a great one to use during prayer and meditation practices, or for a good night’s rest.
RC – contains 3 different kinds of eucalyptus which have naturally occurring eucalyptol (really good stuff), inspires and uplifts before working out, creates a comforting environment, and is excellent for respiratory support.
DiGize – supports a super healthy digestive system, alleviates nausea and upset/sour stomach, great for occasional irregularity or upset tummies, relief from occasional heartburn
Lemon – naturally highlights hair, all natural de-greaser, maintains energy levels, helps oily skin, calluses, cellulite, detoxing your body, weight loss. The works!
Stress Away – exactly what it says. We roll it onto our wrists and the back of our necks anytime we want it. ☺️ This one makes for one happy mama on busy weekday mornings and in traffic on the crazy, California freeways. And did I mention it smells like key lime pie? Oh yes.
Peppermint – part of the trio that helps me enjoy springtime outdoors, keeps my head happy when it’s under pressure, supports the digestive system, promotes proper nasal and respiratory function, helps curb sugar cravings, and helps me feel more awake and energized! I’m obsessed.
Panaway – so many types of relief. Helps with occasional head discomfort, everyday joint and muscle soreness, and that “time of the month” cramp sucky-ness. A must have for the gym.
Lavender – “the Swiss Army knife of essential oils.” We use it for enjoying the springtime outdoors. It’s also great for relaxation, sleepy cream, a calm environment for kids and grownups, healthy, beautiful skin, soothing summertime skin and so much more!

All of these oils are SO GOOD!  You should get you some.  😉  When you do, use this link to order your PSK so you can be a Joyful Oiler too!  Make sure my numbers are in the enroller and sponsor fields—3471989—and when your order goes through you can expect a welcome email from me and some snail-mail with goodies shortly thereafter.  If you order *this month* (August 2016) you also get a bonus 12th oil, cedarwood, when you join as a wholesale member!  In case you missed my blog all about cedarwood earlier this month, it’s a great oil for restful sleep, gorgeous skin, promoting hair growth and more!  (We put it in our sleepy time roll-ons, shampoo and mascara!)

Herbs vs essential oils – What’s the difference?

When Young Living essential oils released their Vitality line of essential oils, a line of essential oils labeled specifically for dietary use, one of the questions a lot of people asked was “Why cook with herbal essential oils?  Why not just use the herbs themselves?”  This is a valid question.  In fact, when I was brand new to essential oils I thought the same thing, and you wouldn’t find essential oils in my cooking.  However, after learning a  thing or two I am now a big fan of using essential oils in my food, drinks etc.

First off, as I mentioned in a previous post, therapeutic grade essential oils are highly concentrated liquids extracted from the leaves, petals, roots, bark or peels of various aromatic plants, usually through gentle steam distillation.  They constitute the plant’s very essence, which is why they have the plant’s characteristic smell, and they also act as a plant’s “blood” so to speak, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the plant’s cells.  They keep the plant healthy and help fight off the stuff it doesn’t want, just as your immune system does for you.  The reason essential oil is so concentrated is because it takes a great deal of plant matter to get just a small amount of essential oil.  It takes dozens, sometimes even hundreds of a plant to get a single bottle of essential oil.  That’s why a single drop of essential oil goes a long way.  This is why you can add just one drop of Lemon Vitality essential oil to flavor a glass of water or a drop of dill essential oil in a veggie dip.  The flavor you get from essential oils packs a punch, and it doesn’t take much.

Secondly, let’s talk about frequency.  Quantum physics tells us that everything is essentially made up of energy at the quantum level, and as a result, everything you see (and even what you can’t see) has a frequency.  Frequency can be defined as a measurable rate of electrical energy that is constant between any two points.  Everything—whether it’s a person, a plant, a piano, or even an emotion—has a frequency.

Bruce Tainio of Tainio Technology in Cheney, Washington developed specialized equipment capable of measuring the biofrequency of humans and foods.  Measuring in Megahertz (MHz) he found that a healthy person has a frequency of around 62-68 MHz.  Unhealthy substances, lifestyles and—believe it or not—negative thoughts can cause dips in our frequency, and when it gets down low enough, our bodies start to show symptoms.  This is when illnesses can sometimes manifest.  It is so important for us to keep ourselves well and to keep our frequency up!

As I mentioned, lifestyle habits are a huge factor here.  Dried herbs have a frequency of 12-23 MHz, and that frequency goes up to 20-27 MHz in fresh herbs.  So the old adage that fresh is best is true!  However, this is where things get even more interesting.  Essential oils have a frequency between 52-320 MHz!  This means that—as far as frequency is concerned—even the lowest frequency oil is still higher and more beneficial to our bodies than their freshly picked counterparts.

Frequency, flavor and concentration aside, essential oils, unlike herbs, don’t have to be digested before they go to work in your body.  When you ingest food or herbs, your body first has to digest those foods, breaking them down before their nutrients can be assimilated.  Essential oils, on the other hand, do not have to be digested; their molecules are so teeny tiny that they are able to penetrate every cell of the human body in mere minutes, and many can even pass the blood-brain barrier.  This is because a single drop of essential contains approximately 400 million trillion molecules!  That is about 40,000 eo molecules for every cell in the human body.  Additionally, when you ingest a therapeutic grade essential oil, you are ingesting a plant’s concentrated life energy, complete with its micronutrients, oxygenating molecules and other therapeutic qualities.  Dried herbs and the like can lose as much as 90% of their nutrients and oxygenating properties.

So let’s recap.  Essential oils (when distilled properly from healthy, organic plants) are far more concentrated than herbs, have a higher biofrequency and do not need to go through the digestive process to work on our cells.  Please note that I am only referring to Young Living’s therapeutic grade essential oils labeled as dietary supplements, and not the essential oils you buy at the store; all oils are not created equal.  Please only ingest oils that 1) come from sources you know and trust 2) are specifically labeled for ingestion on the bottle and 3) are therapeutic grade and considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe) by the FDA.  Because of their Seed to Seal promise, Young Living essential oils meet all of those criteria.  If you would like more info on ingesting oils, you can read my past blog on the Vitality line of essential oils or you can contact me for more information.  To order oils, please use this link.  I hope you learned something new today.  Let’s connect soon!

Deep Relief for when you stay up on Pinterest all night

It turns out I can’t pin like I could in my 20s.  In my 20s I could stay up pinning til like 2 in the morning and be totally fine the next day.  Now I can barely hang til 11 p.m. and the next day I feel like a truck hit me.  I stayed up late pinning last night and when I woke up my back and neck were so angry with me.  Like, it hurt to move my head.  I am ever so grateful for this magical unicorn of an oil.  I just rolled some on my poor, achy neck and the clouds parted and angels began to sing. This is the stuff right here.  Thank you Deep Relief.  I love you to infinity and beyond! 😄🎉

So what makes Deep Relief essential oil blend so wonderful?  We talked a little bit about it yesterday.  (It’s one of the essential oils you can earn for FREE this month!)    Deep Relief combines peppermint, lemon, Balsam Canada, clove bud, copaiba, coconut oil, wintergreen, helichrysum flower, vetiver root, and dorado azul seed essential oils in a convenient roll-on bottle.  Together, these oils provide deep and lasting relief for sore muscles, joints and ligaments, stressed nerves and occasional head pressure.  This roll on bottle bounces around between my purse, backpack and gym bag on the daily because it is THAT essential.

Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients and what they do.

Peppermint aids in the body’s natural ability to fend off inflammation.  It has a soothing, cooling effect and also helps to enhance the effects of the other oils in the blend.  Additionally, it helps the entire blend to quickly penetrate the tissues of the body.

Lemon promotes health, the body’s natural ability to heal itself, physical energy and purification.  It has an invigorating and warming fragrance and has been used historically to support the muscles in overcoming soreness.

Balsam fir creates a feeling of grounding, anchoring and empowerment.  It can also stimulate the mind while simultaneously allowing the body to relax.  When used topically (as you would in this blend) it can help to relieve tired muscles and joints.

Copaiba is extremely high in β-Caryophyllene, a sesquiterpene which is immensely helpful to the body’s natural ability to fight inflammation.  Traditionally, copaiba has been used for muscle aches, stiffness and nervous exhaustion.  It is also known as a “magnifier,” magnifying the effects of the other essential oils it is blended with.

Clove is well known for its powerful numbing sensation and its immune supporting qualities.

Wintergreen contains 99% methyl salicylate, which gives it cortisone-like properties.  It can be very beneficial for  supporting the relief of achy muscles, bones, and joints.

Helichrysum can be cleansing to the blood and may support the circulatory system.  It is an excellent support to bone health as well as to brain health.

Vetiver has a warming effect on the skin when applied topically and can also be stress-relieving.

Dorado Azul has been known to support the hormonal, nervous and respiratory systems and provides an excellent support to the body’s natural ability to relieve inflammation.

Together, all of the above essential oils have a beautiful, synergistic effect which feels amazing on the skin and goes down deep to help you feel good.  Two thumbs up for Deep Relief essential oil blend!  It is liquid gold, so it’s no wonder that Young Living limits purchases of this roll-on to one bottle per account per month—and it STILL goes out of stock pretty frequently.  Not right now though, so grab it while you can!  Did I mention you can get it for free this month if you play your cards just right?  Want to get it at the wholesale price (24% off retail)?  Become a member now by grabbing a kit from me and then add this precious blend to your cart before you check out.  I promise you, you’re going to be like “Hey Deep Relief, where have you been all my life?!”  And then you will be able to be up all night on Pinterest, pinning all the things, until the wee hours of the morning and your neck won’t hate you forever the next day.  And that is my PSA for the day. The end.

Young Living’s August 2016 Promos – How to get free essential oils this month

Grab these oils FREE this August!

It’s Back to School season, and this August you’ll want to start the school year off with these freebies from Young Living!  This month, YL is really kicking it up a notch with their August Promos, and just in time too.  If you’re not already a wholesale member of Young Living essential oils, this is a GREAT month to get started.  For one thing, Young Living is giving a free bottle of Cedarwood essential oil to everyone who grabs their Premium Starter Kit this month, so people starting this month will get 12 oils instead of the usual 11 (plus a diffuser, NingXia red, samples and more.)  You may recall from a recent post that Cedarwood is a great essential oil for sleep support, relaxation and hair growth.

Additionally, YL is offering some amazing PV Promos this month!  Not sure what that means?  No worries.  I’ll explain.  PV in this context refers to Personal Volume or Point Value.  Generally speaking, $1=1 PV, though this does not apply to all of the products.  This is the case for most of the oils though!  Each month, YL gives you different freebies for hitting certain PV minimums, and there is usually an additional freebie for people who hit these minimums on an Essential Rewards (ER) order.  ER is a loyalty program in which you get a monthly subscription box of oils and earn back a percentage of the PV you earn.  You can then exchange these ER points for more oils!  ER is awesome because 1) you can change your order as many times as you want 2) you can change your ER date around as needed 3) you can easily cancel any time, no questions asked and 4) the longer you’re on it, the bigger the percentage of PV you earn back.  Who doesn’t love free stuff?

Usually, the PV minimums for earning Promo items are 190 PV, 250 PV and 300 PV.

This August, if you order 190 PV of Young Living products (essential oils, nutritional supplements, non-toxic household cleaning products, toothpaste, skincare products, weight loss supplements—whatever) you will get a free 5-ml bottle of Bergamot Vitality essential oil and a 15-ml bottle of Lime essential oil.  If the 190 PV order is done on an Essential Rewards order, then you’ll also get a 15-ml bottle of Clarity essential oil.  Total, this is $86.52 worth of free stuff!

At the 250 PV level, you will earn a 5-ml bottle of Bergamot Vitality essential oil, a 15-ml bottle of Lime essential oil and a 3 pack of Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier.  If this is done on an Essential Rewards (ER) order, then you will also get a free 15-ml bottle of Clarity essential oil.  This is $104.61 of free oil products!

When you hit the 300 PV minimum, the Promo is even better!  You will earn a 5-ml bottle of Bergamot Vitality essential oil, a 15-ml bottle of Lime essential oil, a 3-pack of Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier AND (this is AWESOME) two very popular essential oil roll-on bottles, Deep Relief Roll-On and Breathe Again Roll-On.  Again, if this is done on an Essential Rewards (ER) order, you will also get a free 15-ml bottle of Clarity essential oil.  At the 300 PV level, this Promo gets you $173.69 of free stuff!

Now that you know what you can earn for freeeee, let’s talk about what each of these things can do for you.

Bergamot has a light citrusy scent, which can be uplifting and relaxing when diffused. It’s what gives Early Grey tea its characteristic scent. This oil can help build confidence and enhance your mood. It has a long history of use for oily and troubled skin. This oil can be helpful with irritants on the lips and mouth area.  It’s also well known for lending support to the endocrine system.

Bergamot applied to the rims of ears is excellent for grief and sorrow. Diffused, or worn on the wrists, this oil can help with anxiety.

Add this oil to your bath water to help relax and cleanse your body.

Apply this oil with Tea Tree Oil to your lips and mouth area to help maintain a beautiful smile.

Make a room spray using this oil with lavender, organic witch hazel and distilled water. Spritz around your sleeping area to have an “annoyance-free” rest.

Lime essential oil has a light and uplifting scent. Diffuse it to encourage feelings of positivity. This oil has an invigorating and stimulating effect and is believed to be native of Eastern Malaysia. The pleasant citrus aroma of this oil may help mental clarity and encourage creativity. Today, this oil is known throughout the world to support a healthy immune system. When taken internally, this oil may provide antioxidant support and aid in weight management.

Diffuse this oil to promote mental clarity and focus.

Put a drop in your water to promote immune system support and weight loss.

Apply topically to help reduce stress and to enjoy the outdoors “annoyance free”.

Add this oil to your favorite Asian and Mexican dishes, especially guacamole or salsa fresca!

Clarity essential oil blends basil, cardamom, rosemary, peppermint, rosewood, geranium, lemon palmarosa, ylang ylang, bergamot, Roman chamomile, and jasmine for an aroma that invites a sense of clarity and alertness, perfect for back to school time!  It may help with memory retention and mental accuracy.  It’s excellent for brain health.

Diffuse this blend while studying for a test, then smell this same blend during your test to help you recall what you studied earlier.

Diffuse to help clear confusion when your mind is seeking clarity.

If no diffuser is around, drop some on a cotton ball and set it near your desk at work or at school.

Apply across the brow, on the back of the neck, on the temples or on the wrists when driving late at night or early in the morning.

Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier is a great way to cleanse and purify your hands.  It is infused with peppermint, clove, lemon, eucalyptus, rosemary and cinnamon essential oils.   Apply a small amount to your hands and rub them together or a fresh, clean feel without a bunch of unnecessary chemicals.

Deep Relief roll-on combines peppermint, lemon, balsam fir, copaiba, clove, wintergreen, helichrysum, vetiver and palo santo essential oils pre-mixed with fractionated coconut  carrier oil for easy and convenient application.

Deep Relief is amazing on post-workout muscles, on a stiff neck after a long night of studying or sitting at a computer and for occasional head pressure.

Keep this in your backpack, gym bag or purse at all times.  I never leave home without mine!  This stuff if like gold, and YL only allows members to buy one of these roll-ons per month, but if you play your cards right this month you can score THREE!  How?  Include this oil roll-on in your 300 PV Essential Rewards order and you’ll receive the one you bought PLUS the Deep Relief Promo.  Later in the month, place a 300 PV quick order (not ER) and get another Deep Relief Promo!  This is a blend that tends to sell out and go out of stock, so trust.  You. Want. To. Stock. Up.

Breathe Again essential oil roll-on was specially formulated to promote a healthy respiratory system.  It combines 4 different varieties of eucalyptus essential oil, laurel, rose hip, peppermint, copaiba, myrtle, manuka and coconut oil for an invigorating blend that invokes a sense of peace and balance.  This blend’s main purpose is to support the immune system and open up the nasal passages.  Can you see why this oils makes the grade for one of the top back to school essentials?  This is another oil which is limited to one purchase per account per month, so this is a great time to stock up while you can.  (See my strategy for Deep Relief above!)

If you have any questions about how this Promo stuff works, or if you’d like some help becoming a wholesale member yourself, be sure to get in touch with me.  You can give me a call at (760) 658-0655, you can email me at crystal@thejoyfuloilers.com or you can connect with me via any of my social media account.  If you’re ready to grab your kit now, click this link to enroll with me as your enroller and sponsor.  Remember, if you join in August 2016 you will get TWELVE essential oils, a diffuser, NingXia Red etc, plus some EXTRA goodies from yours truly, and if you add to your initial order of a PSK until it adds up to 300 PV then you’ll also get all of the goodies we just talked about!  I hope to connect with you soon!

Gentle Baby Essential Oil – For Sleep, Skincare and more during Pregnancy, Infancy and Beyond

When I was pregnant with my Jeffrey bean (after struggling a bit and miscarrying) I wanted to make sure I did everything “right.”  In my research I learned some disturbing facts about personal care products, and I was surprised to learn that many products marketed to mommies for babies (like baby lotions) contain some pretty yucky ingredients.  I’m talking things like propylene glycol, parabens, triclosan, 1,4-dioxane and ethylated surfactants. You may recall some of these from my recent post on deodorant.

Back then I was still using grocery store essential oils because I didn’t know any better, and as far as baby products went, I bought the safest stuff I could find at my local health food store.  If I could go back in time I would find 20-something-year old me and say “Hey, girl!  Here’s some Gentle Baby essential oil blend and cold-pressed, organic coconut oil.  You’re welcome.”

Gentle Baby is profoundly comforting to both pregnant women and babies alike, and I so wish I had found it sooner.  Its soothing aroma is great for relaxation and stress management during pregnancy, and many babies (and children) love it for sleep.  My 5 year old daughter loves this one at bedtime, or anytime she needs comfort.  I have used it in my diffuser for sleep too, when I’ve run out of lavender.  It smells divine, like a freshly bathed, snuggly baby.  It’s a lovely oil to diffuse during a baby shower and, for me and many others, it powerfully evokes the memory of our own cuddly babies.  I don’t know how they got a mix of a bunch of flowers to smell so much like babies, but it seriously does.  So if you catch the “baby fever”, don’t say I didn’t warn you. 😉

i1035 FW1.1

The scent magically transports me back to when I was a brand new mommy, with my squishy, cloth-diapered newborn in his Yellow Submarine themed nursery.  We talked about why smells can do that to us in a previous post.  Essential oils go to work on the limbic system, the emotional processing center of the brain.  The olfactory bulb has intimate access to the amygdala, which processes emotion, and the hippocampus, which is responsible for learned associations, so certain smells can instantly call up memories and evoke powerful emotions or reactions.  I have to be honest here.  Looking at these pictures of my now 7 year old son as a cloth-diapered baby while smelling Gentle Baby for inspiration completely reduced me to a blubbering puddle of tears; my husband came downstairs while I was writing that last paragraph and I think I kinda freaked him out.  If you’re reading this, sorry babe.  I’m ok now. 😉

Sigh…they grow up so, so fast, but I digress…

Gentle Baby is also wonderful for skin support.  I initially bought it to reduce the appearance of my post-baby stretch marks and wrinkles, and many mamas I know use it as an all natural solution to soothe diaper rashes and dry, chapped baby skin.  For babies, dilute heavily with coconut oil or other carrier oil of choice and apply as needed.  Remember, therapeutic grade essential is highly concentrated, so a single drop goes a long way.

Any doulas reading this?  This essential oil is perfect for women to have during pregnancy, labor and delivery.  Mamas-to-be love this oil (when mixed with a carrier such as V-6 or coconut oil) during prenatal massage for relieving stress and anxiety, and it can also help create an atmosphere of serenity.  Bonus, it can help prevent scarring.  Before and during labor it can also be massaged on the perineum to help it stretch for easier birthing.

Gentle Baby is an essential oil blend combining geranium, rosewood, lemon, lavender, jasmine, Roman chamomile, bergamot, ylang ylang, palmarosa and rose essential oils.  Geranium has been used in skincare for centuries because of its ability to support skin tissue and nerves.  Rosewood is also soothing and nourishing to skin and can enhance the skin’s elasticity.  Lemon is a great support to the circulatory and lymphatic systems of the body, and its fragrance is invigorating.  Lavender is considered the “Swiss Army knife” of essential oils because it’s beneficial to most of our body systems, including the skin, plus it is relaxing and grounding.  Jasmine is great for sensitive skin and exhaustion and Roman chamomile combats restlessness.  Bergamot is both calming and uplifting and fabulous for melting away stress.  Ylang ylang is also relaxing, restoring confidence and equilibrium.  Palmarosa is moisturizing to the skin and helps to reduce nervous tension.  Rose can reduce scarring and promotes elasticity of the skin, which is why it’s been used to beautify skin for thousands of years.

Please note: this essential oil blend does contain lemon and bergamot—photosensitive citrus oils—so it can cause the skin to be more sensitive to sunlight.  To be safe, it is best to avoid direct sunlight while wearing this blend or thoroughly washing it off before exposing the skin to UV rays.

For more information about Gentle Baby essential oil or to learn more about the safe use of essential oils during pregnancy, labor, infancy and beyond, I highly recommend reading the book Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern.  It would make a sweet gift for a mama-to-be, along with a Premium Starter Kit (which you can buy here.)  Trust, every mama needs oils in her tool box.  Anyway, thanks for taking a trip down memory lane with me.  I hope you learned something new!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me any time.  Until next time.

What is essential oil? – 5 things you should know

What is essential oil?

Hi friends! Let’s talk about essential oils. What is essential oil and what does it do? I’m going to give you a run down on 5 things you should know about essential oils that will hopefully clear some things up for you, so let’s get started!

1. What are essential oils?

In a nutshell, essential oil is the vital and aromatic liquid extracted from plants. Essential oils come from many different flowers, trees, shrubs, roots and seeds. It’s usually extracted through steam distillation, but that depends on the type of plant being used. Rose essential oil, for example, is made from steam distilling huge quantities of rose petals, and orange essential oil is made from cold-pressing very large quantities of orange rinds.

2. Essential oils are highly concentrated!

It takes about 5,000 pounds to make just one kilo of rose essential oil, which translates to 22 lbs of rose petals to make a single 5 ml bottle of rose essential oil. Because it takes so much plant matter to make such a small amount of essential oil, these oils are very potent. One drop of essential oil contains approximately 40 million trillion molecules! Just so you know what that looks like numerically, that’s a 4 with 19 zeros after it. Crazy, right? I know that sounds like a made up number, but it’s true. To give you an idea of what that means for you, human bodies consist of around 100 trillion cells, so one drop of essential oil has enough molecules to deliver around 40,000 molecules of EO goodness to every one of the cells in our bodies. Essential oils are super concentrated, so a little goes a long way!

3. Essential oils are more than just a pretty smell.

Yes, they do smell amazing but there is more to the story than that. Essential oil is the lifeblood of the plant because the oil protects the plant from disease, provides oxygen and nutrients to the plant and helps it to fight off anything it doesn’t want. You can think of essential oil as the plant’s immune system. When you and I use therapeutic grade essential oils the trillions of teeny tiny molecules are quickly absorbed by our bodies and they immediately go to work at the cellular level, helping us to eliminate toxins in our bodies. Meanwhile, the fragrance of the oil works on the limbic system, the emotional processing center of the brain. The limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone balance which is why some oils can have a calming effect on our physiology while others seem to energize us. This is also why certain smells can trigger memories for you. The chemistry of essential oil is very complex. Each essential oil is made up of between 200 to 500 different bioconstituents, so each oil will have different effects on the different people and animals using them. But, having said all that, this does NOT apply to all essential oils out there because…

4. Not all essential oils are created equal.

I’ll say that again because it bears repeating. Not all essential oils are created equal. There are 4 different grades of essential that you should be aware of and they are 1) therapeutic grade (which is what I have been talking about) 2) “natural” oils 3) extended or altered oils and 4) synthetic or nature-identical oils. Therapeutic grade oils are oils that have been carefully distilled so that the therapeutic qualities of the plants are retained. Natural oils are real essential oil in the sense that they truly do come from plants, but they have failed to distill the plants properly resulting in essential oil that doesn’t contain any or just a few of the therapeutic compounds. Extended and altered oils are what make up a large percentage of the oils you find in stores—including health stores—and these oils often contain ingredients you don’t want to be inhaling or putting on your body. Often times there will be only a few drops of real essential oil in the bottle and the rest will be carrier oil, synthetic perfume or some other mystery liquid. The kicker is that they don’t have to tell you what those mystery ingredients are because these essential oils are “fragrance grade” and their ingredients are considered proprietary information by the FDA. The 4th grade of oils is synthetic grade, also considered “fragrance” by the FDA. Synthetic oils are created in laboratories to mimic certain scents, and while they may smell nice they do not contain any of nature’s health supporting qualities. Worse than that, they often contain toxins which can be hazardous to your health. Just say no to mystery oils! This is why…

5. You should always know and trust your essential oil source.

Because of the way essential oils are regulated, you can’t always tell what grade of essential oil you have just by looking at the bottle. The brand I used to buy from my local health food store had a USDA organic label on it, but I later learned that an oil can legally claim itself to be USDA organic if the oil itself is organic but that the company can add other non-organic ingredients to the oil to make it stretch that are nowhere near being organic, and they don’t have to mention it on the label because they too are regulated as “fragrance” by the FDA. (Mystery fragrances are exempt from the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act because they are considered “trade secrets” by the FDA.) Then there are companies who have trademarked phrases that they use on their bottles, like “certified pure therapeutic grade”, that are actually meaningless because it’s not a real 3rd party certification, it’s just a phrase trademarked by the company. That means that no matter how pure or therapeutic another company’s oil is, they can’t go get that certification because it’s not a real certification. It’s a clever but made up marketing tool.

So then, who do you trust? After doing tons and tons of research I placed my trust in Young Living Essential Oils. Young Living is the world leader in essential oils with over 20 years of expertise in harvesting and distilling plants that go above and beyond organic standards. Young Living has set the bar very high for the essential oil industry because of its Seed To Seal guarantee. Young Living plants its own carefully selected seeds on its own farms and then harvests and distills the plants so that the therapeutic qualities remain intact. They are very transparent in their practices and open up their world-wide farms, distilleries and bottling plants to the public so we can experience Seed To Seal in action. I have been to Young Living’s lavender farm in Mona, Utah and it was truly amazing. I got to help plant yarrow in the greenhouse and I watched the distillation of blue yarrow and juniper essential oils. I even got to tour the bottling plant, and everything was on the up and up. What other essential oil company offers that level of transparency?

Also, since Young Living has farms allover the world they are able to offer a huge selection of essential oils, well over 200 different oils choose from and more than 500 oil-infused products, everything from toothpaste to all-purpose household cleaner. If you’re curious about trying essential oils but want more information you can explore the rest of my website or if you’re ready to dive in and buy right now you can follow this link to grab your Premium Starter Kit from me right now. Most of us started with The Premium Starter Kit because it’s the best value, saving you around $170 versus buying everything separately at the retail price. All Natural Deodorant That Actually Works

The best nontoxic all natural deodorant

Let’s talk about deodorant. Every single day people far and wide use commercial deodorants to help prevent and/or mask stinky smells under their arms, but most people are completely unaware of just how toxic these deodorants can actually be. Every time you apply these products you are exposing yourself to a host of dangerous chemicals, and over time these exposures can spell disaster for your health. It’s no wonder chronic disease is on the rise in our country. According to the National Cancer Institute, “In 2016, an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 595,690 people will die from the disease.”  Because skin is the largest organ of the human body, it is important that we be mindful of what we are putting on it.

As far as deodorants go, the National Cancer Institute states, “Reports have suggested that these products contain harmful substances, which can be absorbed through the skin or enter the body through nicks caused by shaving. Some scientists have also proposed that certain ingredients in underarm antiperspirants or deodorants may be related to breast cancer because they are applied frequently to an area next to the breast.”

So what are these harmful ingredients that are lurking in deodorant? To name a few, many deodorants and antiperspirants contain 1) aluminum compounds (to block the pores from sweating) 2) parabens (used as preservatives) 3) Propylene glycol (another additive which often makes up as much as 50% of deodorant content, even in “all natural” deodorants) 4) Triclosan (classified as a pesticide by the FDA and used to combat bacteria) and 5) Steareths (caricinogenic additives used to make harsh chemicals more mild.) Now that we’ve named just a handful of the toxins in deodorant, let’s talk about what makes them so terrible for you.

Heavy metals, such as aluminum, often interfere with your estrogen receptors’ ability to correctly process the hormone. They have been linked to breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in men, and an increased risk of Alzheimer’s. Heavy metals can accumulate in brain tissue, and they are very difficult to get rid of once they are there!

Parabens have been known to mimic the properties of estrogen in human cells, so they can disrupt hormonal balances. This can lead to early puberty in children, accumulation of toxins in your vital organs and even hormone-related cancers in women. According to a 2004 study, parabens can accumlate in breast tissue; parabens were found in 18 of 20 samples of tissue from human breast tumors.

Propylene glycol has a terribly dangerous, synergistic effect when it’s mixed with other toxic chemicals (such as the ones previously mentioned.) Propylene glycol damages the central nervous system, liver and heart. Even when this ingredients is found in very small concentrations (2% or less), it can cause irritation in sensitive skin. As I mentioned already, many manufacturers have made deodorants that are 50% propylene glycol, and this even applies to many “all natural” brands. I don’t know about you, but I find this statistic to be very disturbing!

Moving on. Triclosan, which is used as a preservative and antibacterial agent in deodorant, reacts with tap water to create chloroform gas, a known carcinogen. It also has endocrine disrupting properties that can be passed along in human breast milk. It is often found in our blood.

Steareths are usually listed with a number (for instance, steareth-15.) These additives come from a cheap process that makes harsh ingredients more mild. Ethoxylation, as this process is known, produces potentially cancer-causing 1,4-dioxanes when manufactured.

all natural deodorant that actually works well

So what is a stinky human to do? Well, there are many natural alternatives to commercial deodorant available to you. If you are a big DIY person, you can make your own deodorant using recipes like this one on instructables.com.  If you’re like a lot of people, a super busy person with very little extra time to DIY personal care products, you can buy an already made non-toxic deodorant, like the ones offered by Young Living. But my personal favorite thing to use is Purification, an essential oil blend containing citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, tea tree, lavandin and myrtle essential oils. I just put a little in my hands and rub under my arms after a shower. Easy peasy!

This oil blend is purifying, deodorizing and oxygenating, so it creates an environment that body odor-causing bacteria don’t thrive in. Bonus, the lemongrass supports the lymphatic system, so it can help your body get rid of some of those toxins you’ve stored from all the commercial deodorants you’re no longer using. (You’re going to stop using those, right? Ok, good. ;)) Plus the aroma of Purification oil is wonderfully fresh and uplifting. People compliment me on how good I smell everywhere I go. At the doctor’s office, at the tire shop, at the grocery store. I should mention that it does not prevent you from sweating; your body is supposed to sweat. It’s one of the ways we excrete our waste and is actually a very important function. But Purification can help you not stink when you sweat, and isn’t that the main goal at the end of the day?

So, how can you get your hands on some Purification essential oil? There are two ways. You can get on to the Young Living website, sign up as a retail customer and pay full price for a single bottle of Purification essential oil. OR (and this is the best way by far) you can grab a Premium Starter Kit where you will get a bottle of Purification, a diffuser and 10 other awesome oils that you can and will use every day for a healthier, reduced toxin life. The choice is yours, my friends, but whatever you do, please, please stop using toxic deodorants under your arms. Got questions? Benefits of Cedarwood essential oil – Long, luscious locks, restful sleep and more!

Grow luscious lashes with cedarwood essential oil

Cedarwood essential oil is steam distilled from the bark of Cedar Wood trees, which typically grow at high altitudes in cold climates.  Because cedarwood essential oil is so versatile, it has been used to support wellness for millennia.  It was mentioned several times in the Bible, it has been used in traditional medicine and as incense in Tibet, and the ancient Egyptians even used it during their embalming process.

The key chemical constituents of cedarwood essential oil are Alpha-Himachalene, Beta-Himachalene, Gamma-Himachalene and Delta-Cadinene.  Cedarwood essential oil is also high in sesquiterpenes.  Ok, that’s great, but what does that mean for you?  Sesquiterpene molecules deliver oxygen molecules to cells, like hemoglobin does in our blood, and oxygenated cells are healthy cells.  Sesquiterpenes have also been known to erase or deprogram miswritten codes in the DNA.  Our DNA codes can sometimes get messed up when we are exposed to environmental toxins from unhealthy foods, pesticides, plastics and other harmful substances, and this is when we can become susceptible to illness.  This is why sesquiterpenes are our friends, and cedarwood essential oil has them in abundance!  Also, since the molecules are so tiny (there are around 400 million trillion molecules in a drop of essential oil) they can even pass the blood brain barrier where they can help support healthy brain function.  I like to diffuse cedarwood to help me focus and concentrate during mental tasks.

When used aromatically, cedarwood essential oil stimulates the limbic region of the brain, the emotional center where our feelings are processed.  This is why it can be beneficial to you when you want to release negative emotions that are no longer serving you.  Cedarwood also stimulates the pineal gland, which releases melatonin, a hormone which can help promote rest and relaxation.  This makes cedarwood essential oil an excellent choice for diffusing at night before bedtime.  I personally like to mix it with lavender in my diffuser.

Cedarwood is not only celebrated for its calming properties (hello, squirelly kids, I’m talking to you), but also for its purifying effects.  It provides wonderful skin support, helping to promote radiant, blemish-free skin and it provides great support to the lymphatic system of the body, helping you to more efficiently rid yourself of toxins and other waste.

Cedarwood essential oil is also highly effective at stimulating hair follicles and increasing circulation to the areas where it’s applied, which is why it is great for growing long, luscious lashes or helping your favorite guy (or gal) combat thinning hair.  Hello, long, lovely locks!  For your lashes, just add a drop to your tube of mascara and gently swish it around the sides of the tube.  You can apply the cedarwoord oil directly to the scalp to help stimulate hair growth or you can add several drops to a bottle of your favorite shampoo.  Remember, cedarwood is chock-full of oxygenating molecules.  Do you know what doesn’t thrive in an oxygenated environment?  Bacteria.  So there’s that.  Another great reason to add it to your tube of mascara!

So let’s recap.  Cedarwood essential is rich in oxygenating, sesquiterpene molecules which help to support overall wellness and brain health.  They are extremely versatile and can be used to:

  • support restful sleep
  • help calm
  • support focused attention
  • stimulate hair growth
  • cleanse and purify
  • balance oily skin
  • provide skin support for occasional blemishes
  • soothe irritated skin
  • provide respiratory support
  • support the lymphatic system
  • ground during yoga or meditation
  • and so much more!

This is why cedarwood essential oil (EO) is considered a houeshold staple by most seasoned EO users, and why it’s among Young Living’s best selling oils.  The great news is that for the entire month of August 2016, Young Living will gift a free bottle of cedarwood essential oil to anyone who grabs their Premium Starter Kit.  This means that if you get your Premium Starter Kit this month you’ll get twelve bottles of essential oil instead of the usual eleven.  Plus you’ll get a couple packets of NingXia Red antioxidant-infused juice, a diffuser, wholesale pricing, a bunch of literature to help you get started, and MORE all for just $160.

When you order through me, I will walk you through the unboxing of your new oils and gift you additional goodies and resources to help you get started.  If you’re ready to buy now and claim your free bottle of cedarwood essential oil, click this link to enroll as a wholesale member now.  My membership number, 3471989, should automatically populate in the enroller/sponsor fields if you get there from my link.  (In case you’re wondering, no, wholesale membership doesn’t mean you have to have automatic shipments, pay a membership fee or sell anything ever!)  When you become a member this month YL will automatically send you your free cedarwood.  If you have any additional questions please feel free to shoot me an email at crystal@thejoyfuloilers.com, give me a call at (760) 658-0655 or find me on any of my social media accounts.  I hope you learned something new today about cedarwood essential oil and I would love to connect with you soon!

Disneyland Adventures: Lavender essential oil to the rescue!

Don’t you hate it when you’re in your hotel room at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel making last minute butterfly hair accessories for your Ella Disneybound and you accidentally get scalding hot glue on your fingers?  Yeah, me too.  I am SO glad I had this little travel-sized dram of Young Living lavender essential oil in my purse.  Take that, hot glue gun!  Lavender is awesome for skin support of all kinds, so I’ve also been using this on my sun-kissed face after these long, hot Disneyland days.  And—as if it couldn’t get any better—I’ve also been putting it in my diffuser to help my kidlets relax into sleep while we’ve been on vacation.  (It’s not always easy falling asleep when you’re a little kid staying at the Disneyland Resort!)  Three cheers for lavender essential oil!
